Tim's Story

Updated 12/7/2021. Well, if anyone really cares to know, here goes! I've lived in Chula Vista, California a suburb city of San Diego since 1973, moved here on my 21st birthday. My younger daughter finally got married in July, 2012 at age 33 (about time!), to a Kennedy from Boston (not those Kennedy's!) - weird thing is, his Mom is Japanese, from Aina Haina! Small world, yeah? My older daughter just passed her 18 yr anniversary, her husband's Dad is a 3rd generation Mexican-American. We got our own World Population Project in the makings! I was born in San Francisco, adopted, and flew to Honolulu at 2 months old. After my Mom died in 1974 and my Dad in 1983, I started searching for my roots. Found my birth Mom in 2011, in Virginia (she's from Memphis,TN and has a real Southern accent), and flew her out here twice to visit her 2 granddaughters and 5 great-grandchildren. In 2019 I flew everyone back there to celebrate her 85th birthday. She's 87 now, never married, no other children. Unfortunately, after getting her Covid shots, she got Covid, suffered brain fog, never recovered, is in a memory care facility. Starting in 2007, I've done a bunch of DNA tests, at Ancestry, 23andMe, My Heritage, and Family Tree DNA. Finally, in December 2020, I had enough matches with family trees attached, so that I was able to do the research and determine who my birth father was! If living, he would be 93! After I left 3 messages at a phone number I got off the internet, he finally called me back on Dec.7th, 2020, a day I'll never forget, and we talked for 5 hours! He remembered my birth Mom! He's an artist, paints every day, is now 94! He lives 3 hours away in L.A., and my wife and I drive up every 3 weeks to visit. His wife has passed, and they had no children. I'm a singleton, no half siblings! We look alike, have the same sense of humor, and my wife can't tell our voices apart if she's in another room! I've been a vegetarian for 40 years (chocolate IS a vegetable, isn't it?). Still love Hawaii Nei, try to visit at least once a year, and wish we were back for good!!! When the time comes, if I'm not in Hawaii when I die, shame on me!!! After '70 Kalani graduation, went to UH a couple years, while working at Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour at Kahala Mall, Michel's at Colony Surf, & a small eatery at former King's Alley in Waikiki. Summer of '72, spent 3 months hiking in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, in the Yosemite area. Snow, bears, rattlesnakes, mosquitos, blisters, et.al., and 500 trail miles, including the 212 mile (roughly- I forgot already) John Muir Trail to top of Mt.Whitney. Summer of '73, did a 60 day Greyhound Bus trip with a gal from San Diego,Calif., who I'd met the previous summer while hiking the Sierras. Had a great time New York sightseeing, hiked in Vermont & New Hampshire, tripp...Expand for more
ed in Maine, then Canada from Quebec to Toronto, to Banff to Vancouver. On to Seattle, hiked Olympic Peninsula, from there to California and Yosemite again (& more damn bears!). By then in love, stayed in San Diego. Married, 2 kids, divorced. Still here in San Diego. Love the weather here, not humid like Hawaii. Good thing took Spanish at Kalani with Mrs. Ayala, as Tijuana,Mexico only 7 miles away! "Que pasa, mi amigo! Como estas?" Thanks to Classmates.com, connected in Spring 2000 with former classmate, at Niu Valley Intermediate & Kalani, sweet Christine Shizuko Ouchi. She living in San Jose, northern Calif., and also divorced with 2 kids. My older daughter was a flight attendant with United Airlines, and man, did I fly a lot of free trips up north every Friday night, for over a year, till I talked Chris into moving down here! We went to our 30th Kalani reunion together, nice to see some of the old (don't take that personally) faces. Ha, speaking of old faces, my Senior Prom date, Lynn Honda, didn't even recognize me. Must be my bald head! She looked the same, though! Chris and I got married in a hot air balloon over Del Mar in San Diego County, 2002. Poor Chris fell out of the basket after we landed, flipped over onto her back into the freshly plowed tomato field. Yikes! Actually, it was hilarious, once we found out she was okay! My daughter Mandy performed the marriage ceremony, as a '1 day/1 event' county official (one of the crazy things they let you do here, for a $50 fee, of course!). My younger daughter, Tamara Leilani, did her college time at UH also, but she graduated (unlike her Dad) and decided to move back to San Diego. She's the branch manager at a national staffing agency, and has built her location into the most successful store nationwide! You go, girl! Tami also loves Hawaii, wishes she were back, but making way too much kala to leave. Her 2 young sons keep her busy! My older daughter, Amanda, lived 5 yrs on the North Shore, working all those crazy minimum wage jobs, eating rice and beans, before hiring on with United. She's a stay at home Mom now, in Carlsbad, CA. I'm not so sure if she wants to move back to Hawaii, but she sure loves to visit, when she can, but taking 3 kids along ain't cheap! I have 5 precious grandkids, Mariana Patricia, Maya Leilani, & Joey Ernesto Carranza, and Evan Sato & Chase Joseph Kennedy. Finally retired at 67 in 2019. I was in store management at Firestone Tire & Rubber for 13 yrs. For last 30 yrs was a service consultant at Buick/GMC/Pontiac dealerships. I was the interface between overzealous technicians and trusting customers. My mottos: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you", and "If you had to pay for it yourself, would you do this repair on your own vehicle AND your mother's?". Life is good. Chris and I wish you all "ALOHA"!!!

Californians are such wimps! 3 big parks by the house, with tennis courts, playgrounds, and ramadas, and all empty! Why? It's too hot! FYI, it's 78. Feels like 78. And, a cool ocean breeze! LOL.
A few flowers from the garden! Today it's dahlias, and some tuberose!
84 degrees on the lanai, with a cool breeze wafting through, at 12:45 pm. Definitely at the high end of my comfort zone!
The sunflowers are going gangbusters, but hard to get a good picture when 9 feet high!

So sad to report my "bonus" (birth) Mom, Berniece Elaine Starnes, passed away in her sleep on Monday the 20th in Virginia Beach, VA., 2 days shy of her 88th birthday. I found her in August of 2011. Picture taken at daughter
In Canoga Park, Los Angeles- helping my 95-year-old birth dad celebrate his birthday! All his descendants excluding the oldest great granddaughter who had to work. He still paints every day!
One of my birth Dad's latest paintings! Not bad for a 95 yr old!
My birth dad painted this one many many moons ago. In a place of honor in my family room! He says it took him 22 hours to paint it!
Here's another painting my 95-year-old birth dad finished about 2 months ago!
