Tim's Story
Alive and well and living in suburban Atlanta!
After high school, went to Johnson & Wales in Providence, intent upon becoming a chef. Stayed in Providence for 4 years, when it wasn't nearly as cool a city as it is now...
Got into a catering company in suburban Boston with with my college roommate, which lasted into the mid 90's. Continued the catering/gourmet store thing in Boston-Marblehead until '96, when it simply snowed too much that year! Read "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," packed the furniture and the dog in the Ryder truck, and never looked back north again.
Landed in Charleston, and sort of "fell into" the country club business, which I did for four years there, then got recruited to a club in Atlanta. Charleston is a pretty magical place, where I can definitely see myself retiring and drinking on the beach.
It took me a lot of years to see that I'm much happier when doing something I love, and that I had had enough of the catering/food world. I started gardening part tim...Expand for more
e for high end residential clients. It had been a hobby for a long time, so I decided to just go for it. At this point, I garden full time on a large estate in suburban Atlanta, and also oversee the family's other properties. It's a great job for me, working in shorts and tshirts in a pretty awesome space. Not sure that I could ever move back north, though my entire family is still in NH. We get about 1 inch of snow a year, which is more than enough in my book.
Get to Portsmouth a few times a year, and can really appreciate what a great place is it much more now than when I was living there as a child. (My sister owns Momma D's Restaurant....you should go there!)
Met my partner in 1985, and we've been together since. We're making good progess restoring a mid-century house and garden that we bought a few years ago here. Like to sit around a giant dining room table with good food, good wines and good friends, at home, in Europe, on the beach, wherever....just enjoying every minute of life!
