Timothy's Story

I have had the great experience of helping raise 6 children (Her's, mine, ours) and now have 14 grandchildren. (Update 09-18-2023) One of my granddaughters just let me know on Saturday that she is pregnant, so I will be a great grandfather soon! I am currently living in Phoenix and plan to retire soon (I own 20 acres in Ash Fork AZ where I want to build a small ranch). Twice married and twice divorced, I have been single now for 17 years. My first marriage lasted almost 13 years until she decided to run off with a younger man. The second lasted 17 years. I have spent the last 51 years working on computer systems, in simulators, in nuclear power plants and in various IT jobs in other industries and will be grateful to turn my attentions to other more important things in life. such as my hobbies and getting the ranch built and running. It's been an interesting journey through life. I have lived, worked and trained in several states such as Tennessee, Kentucky, Maryland (Washington DC), Washington state, California, Arizona, Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, Iowa and Illinois. My first state of choice is Arizona as I have spent most of my life there. My next choice would be Montana, Kentucky. and Washington. Two states I have not spent time in are Alaska and Hawaii. After my time in the Navy (10 years), I worked for Arizona Public Service Company (14 years), IBM (10.5 years), TEK Systems (2 years) and have been back at Arizona Public Service Company since 2008. I was an extra in "Officer and a Gentleman", worked on a political campaign, met a lot of interesting people, some famous and other extraordinarily intelligent people in the course of my life. I have lived on an island for 6 years and enjoyed just about every minute of it (first marriage is the exception as she put a damper on most things I enjoyed). If you check the photo gallery which I am working on, you will eventually see some of the things that I have done, my (our) children, my career and eventually I will be posting pictures of my ranch as it develops. I have placed the photos into Albums. You will have to click on Gallery and when that displays, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Album link. There are currently five albums. Those who are looking for me in the 69 Accolade can find me on page 99 top photo second row, second from the left. My name is listed as Jim Burton (misprint) and I guess the optical character recognition software and subsequent posting left the 69 Accolade out of the Gallery. Important lessons I have learned in life: Don't mix too many types of alcohol, or imbibe too much, you may wake up next to the wrong person and/or do things you regret later in life. Don't drink too much beer, I did and it lead to a bad proposal and subsequent 12 year plus hangover. It happened to me when I was 20 and I have not had a beer since. I do have the rare drink every so many years when it is appropriate, so I did learn my lessons early in life with alcohol. Disclaimer: I "Had too much" at my bachelor party December 8, 1989. The differences I have noticed between men and women: One phrase I leaned in Venusian: "I need my space" translates to I have someone else that I want to be/am involved with despite having a long term relationship with you. I have experienced that a few times in my life. Martian is far less subtle, such as "I met someone else". If there are any ladies out there that can help me interpret other meanings for it, please let me know! Women to this day are a fascinating mystery to me. I do enjoy a good mystery though! Never open your mouth when you are hurt or angry. This applies to personal and business relationships. Unfortunately I can't seem to get this right in business, as a couple of my former managers can attest to. Again ladies, just because a man has nothing to say when you are "discussing" personal matters doesn't mean that he does not care or isn't listening. He cares for you and will not say something that will hurt you hopefully. (More Martian speak) Another Martian thought regarding men visiting doctors; when I was asked by a lady I worked with in Chicago why her husband refused to see a doctor, I told her quite simply that he was afraid of bad news. She did ask her husband if that was the case, assuaged his fears and got him to go to the doctor. Men are really quite simple beings....don't look for hidden meaning, most men don't have complex reasons for things. Things to avoid: Three places never to have your picture taken: The Motor Vehicle Department, work, and Navy boot camp! You are never at your best in those situations and the photographers love to catch you at your worst. I have posted a few examples in the work and hobbies album. I think maybe they all learned photography from the same teacher. Funny Short Stories: When I worked as an extra in An Officer and a Gentleman, they were filming a bar scene. The extras were Navy and Marine Corps personnel. They filled all the glasses in the scene with real beer! Needless to say by the time they finished filling most of those that were filled were quickly emptied! They admonished everyone to not drink afterward! Needless to say I did not drink mine as I had already sworn off beer (still on the 12 plus year hangover with the first wife!). A designer I worked with at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station had an artificial leg. He came in one morning not realizing that he had his underwear around the ankle of his artificial leg......awkward! Needless to say, he corrected the oversight immediately. He was "Briefs Boy" from that day on. Good thing they weren't "Budgie Smugglers" as the Aussies would put it! I worked with a group of guys in the Navy that liked to bowl. They would break for lunch and go bowling. This same group of guys liked to prank others and so one day we took their bowling balls out of their bags and put in three five pound bags of sugar. Some of pranks did get out of hand so we curtailed the pranks. (Kids say the Weirdest Things): My youngest daughter, 3 or 4 at the time, was playing some games with her grandfather (my in-law) and she said I love playing with you papa. He then asked her what would she do when he died. She replied "Then I will play with your bo...Expand for more
nes!" I remarried at age 35. My eldest daughter at the time was 9. When she saw my brides wedding dress was a soft pink, she told Sandy that the dress should be white and wanted to know why it was pink. Sandy explained to her that traditionally the bride should be a virgin in order to wear white. To which my eldest exclaimed, "well then I will just become one!"! Hobbies: I love to shoot and collect guns. I have a modest collection of mostly older guns. I also like to reload my own ammunition. I just posted a picture of my reloading bench in the work and hobbies album in the gallery. I also enjoy building model airplanes (scale flying models). I enjoy designing plans for a lot of things such as the new house I am planning for the ranch, and World War I airplanes. I also like woodworking, metal working, restoring old cars and trucks, drawing, playing musical instruments, writing, reading, and fixing all manner of electronic/mechanical equipment. As far as cars go I have owned a lot of them over the years. The ones I miss the most are my Mustangs. I have owned a 69 Mach I, a 65 Fastback, and a 65 coupe. The 65's both had 4 speeds with high performance engines. Reunion Woes. The 50th virtual reunion was an epic fail. Only 4 people RSVP'ed and I was the only one that actually showed up. I am still working and won't be able to attend the 51st reunion as it is being held on a Friday and I will be working that day. I will miss seeing some of the people that I attended High School with. I was really looking forward to seeing some of you! Ranch Progress: 09/18/21 update - I picked a site for the ranch house and met with a guy that is doing the percolation test, got him paid and he will be doing the test Monday after next. Got some really good pictures of the sunrise over the San Francisco Peaks, some of the local "residents" and a bridge on Route 66 near my property. Check the pictures in the Gallery under the ranch. 09/30/21 - The percolation test came back as passed. I will be getting the septic system installed starting in October. It's fall so I have time before the first snow comes to get that done. After that, we will be clearing a spot to place pads for the house, "power house", solar array, and garage/shop. 10/15/21 - I purchased some house plans online that I will have changed just a bit to suit my needs. There really wasn't enough garage/shop space so that has to be expanded. I liked the design as it was a ranch house with mid century touches in it.I also have all of the solar system planned with the necessary equipment for an auto start generator for a backup power source.. 10/25/21 - Waiting on permits. Looks like a two month wait for permitting the septic system. Apparently it's going in around the first of January. 11/04/2021 - The county (Yavapi) had not recorded the deed transfers for the two new lots I purchased so I had to copy and email them to the county permitting office. Now they want surveys of the land and named access roads to the parcels. My new parcels are a quarter mile off of old Route 66. I now have to hunt down the owner of the parcel north of me and get a survey done as well as having the roads named. The fun never ends when dealing with government! More delays! 11/12/2021 - Took the day off work to visit the property and talk to surveyors. I left Phoenix around 1:15 AM and got there to take in the fantastic light show in the sky. I haven't seen that many stars since we left the corn fields in Illinois. I remember them from the upper desert in California in the 50's. I posted a picture of the night sky in Ash Fork. 12/4/2021 - After the two day "maintenance" experienced here on Classmates, they bolluxed up my gallery. I added back some of the photos that they did not restore the links to. I also did some light edits in the funny stories section here. It occurred to me while I was scanning old photos of my second wedding. It comes under the heading of kids say the weirdest things. 12/13/2021 - My permit for the septic system got approved! I am stoked! Problem is the guy doing the installation cannot get it in until February. Next up is the permit to get my house built! 2/15/2022 - The septic tank finally arrived and they got it installed today. I posted two pictures of the operation. Going back up this weekend and settle up with my contractor. Need to also discuss with him getting the ground leveled and prepped for the house pad. My realtor emailed on Saturday and I have an offer on my upper parcel. Going to cash that out to continue building on the lower parcels. 3/8/2022 - The sale on my upper lot closed and I got enough to at least get the foundation started on the house with a bit left over for starting the framing. I was up in Ash Fork over the weekend and got a line on a contractor to do the foundation while I was having coffee with "the boys" at the local diner. I love the sleepy little town. The people are friendly there. Floyd, one of the locals opened the diner before the waitress and cook showed up and had coffee ready for anyone wanting to stop and have some with "the boys". 04/18/2022 - Sent my house plans off to an architect to expand the garage to allow more shop space and get room for my off grid system installed. He will be doing the permitting also. 08/02/2022 - The architect that I hired has not done a thing with the plans I sent him. I did find another firm to handle the drawings to ensure they were compliant with the sate and county regulations, make some changes I needed and to get it permitted. Crossing my fingers on this one. 07/07/2023 - For a permit, I need to get a soil stability test done in order to lay a foundation. Fortunately, I do have a contact that I can use to get this done. Hopefully he is not too heavily booked up to do this soon. 12/10/23 - I found out that I will not need a soil stability test if I use stamped, engineered plans. I am waiting on some prefabricated buildings that won't be available until March of next year and for a builder to be available to help with the foundations. So I will be working all next year and banking that for the build. Thankfully I paid off my house in Phoenix in October and should have enough to build without selling my house here in Phoenix.
