Timothy's Story

The NOW photo myself setting my sights on monetizing the discoveries I made in my dissertation on improving infrared temperature sensors. TTinc. tech October, 2018--I am now a Doctor! I defended my dissertation on Oct. 19th and was award the degree of Doctor of Professional Studies in Computers (DPS) from Pace University. This matches up with my bachelor’s degree: a BPS in Math, Science, & Technology from Empire State College. Both are special degrees for working adults that don’t require residential time on campus. The lack of a residential requirement speeds up the time for getting a doctorate from 7 years to 3 - 5 years. In my case it took 5 years. The topic for my dissertation was “Improving Infrared Temperature Sensor Readings Using Machine Analysis of Emissivity.” This dissertation aligns with the startup my son, David, and I started: Infrared Medical Technology, LLC. in 2015. Our plans are to monetize the discoveries and insights I have been investigating. Our design, ThermoWand®, will revolution thermometers with a camera system capable of obtaining accurate temperatures from a distance as far away as 3 feet. This capability will give health care workers a measure of security against pathogens that could be exhaled in a patient’s breathe. Improving health care is IMT’s number one priority. We have also discovered new applications for ThermoWand® with animals helping to protect the food chain. December, 2015--Rather momentous occasion recently, I successfully launched a Kickstarter campaign from MIT (see the video in updates), achieve our modest goal target of $30K, and launched a new company called Infrared Medical Technologies, LLC. I even have backers with deep pockets! Egads! Search Kickstarter for Thermowand, the infrared temperature thermometer. I even have two additional applications for it. Only 20% of technical campaigns reach goal on Kickstarter. OH, still working on the doctorate. Trying to incorporate the research in the dissertation. June, 2015--Was I busy the past 1 1/2 years, when they cram a 7 year degree into 3 years...no time. Thanks everyone for stopping by and "remembering me" I'm writing the doctoral dissertation in Comp Sci this summer so I continue being busy but I have retired a 2nd time: this past May from Wentworth Institute of Technology and I put a new business website up at captainsengineering. December, 2013--After taking a few classes in computer security...don't put anything on the net you don't want to get out. I was going to update my address for Classmates but thought better of it. If they get my SS# they could get a credit card except for the incorrect address here on Classmates. The new Windows 8 has taken steps to improve the safety. The information sent over the net in those SS encrypted are pretty good but if the server you are sending it to has been compromised, you're sunk and you won't even know it. The bank sends you a new card. December 2012--Fortunately, I've recovered from my breakup and I am seeing a woman in NY I've known since 1980. We're having a great time together, we both love to dance and swim. We're both professors and one semester we had the same days off so I spend 4 days in NY and 3 in Boston. We ride the train back and forth which I know will sound strange to you Californians but its such a relief not to drive 4 or 5 hours at high speed in traffic. September, 2012--I'm starting on a new degree program: a Doctor of Professional Studies of Computer Science. It's a 3-year program that mixes course/classes on a monthly basis with a dissertation. This is a degree offered by the NY State Department of Education for professionals in the computer science field. I've been going around saying for a while now that the future of hardware is software. Now, I have to get a degree in computer science because of all the software in Electrical Engineering. It's also covering computer internet security issues which is big. Speaking of big the program covers Data mining, machine learning, and web services. December 2010--its been a busy year. My long time girlfriend and I have parted ways shortly after my returning from Budapest. Not my choice. I've moved into Boston and now have a view of the skyline of Boston which at night is lovely and a view of the harbor that I've spent many a day sailing. . Oct., 2009. ...Expand for more
I went to Budapest to present a paper on I2C bus using the TI MSP430 rf2500 chip with a student of mine who did all the work. He was very good and is now working at Draper Labs. Had a great time, check out the photo albums. Jan., 2007. Call me Associate Professor now, a three year odyssey after filing the initial paperwork. I eventually had to assembly a 2" thick dossier on my scholarship, community service and service to the Institute to satisfy the committee. Oh, I forgot to mention I wrote a play in 2005 about a swim...I believe it's featured in one of the photo albums. The play is called Stud of the Hudson and is available on Amazon. June, 2005. Just back from the Fohi 50th Anniversary celebration & All-class reunion. Nice time, good food, decent music, and as always, great company! 2004, Thanksgiving. The wife finished the dining room in time so we could eat in style. I've modified the Massachusetts Society of Professional Engineers web page and posted pictures of the family in Hawaii. 2004, Summer--Well, I'm president of the MSPE now and darn but what the annual convention isn't in Hawaii. What a deal! 2003, Fall--I can't believe it, after 3 years of trying, the sailing club finally happened at the college where I teach. I had 50 students show up at the first meeting. 3 weeks ago, I was sitting in a launch on the Charles River watching my students compete against: Harvard, MIT, Brandeis, Boston College...we got creamed. Hey, it's our first year! Plus the chess team is coming together. We expect to start competing soon. 2003, Summer--Wow, what a year. I'm President-elect for the Massachusetts Society of Professional Engineers. I'm going to be busy representing engineers all over the State. Oh, yes, my company published a second book: Introductory Physics-A Model Approach. Mortgaged my NY home up to the hilt and purchased a boat, 65', holds 100 passengers. I put it in a company that runs fishing charters out of New Bedford, MA (the same port that the Pequod sailed out of...remember Moby Dick?). 2003, Spring--Finally took and passed the Professional Engineer exam in Electrical--Computer Engineering. Nailed it in my first sitting, passing score is 70 and I managed an 81!! We're having parties in Boston, Cape Cod, and NY to celebrate. So, I'm now Capt. Tim Johnson, PE. 2002--I wrote my first book! I wanted to help out the students who were having a problem finding a job. It's called "Finding A Job in Tough Times". Published by my own company and available on Amazon. 2000--I'm still back East and enjoying my second career, second wife (Caprice), my darling daughter (Avery) and my three jobs. Love to hear from you! I finished a Masters in Electrical Engineering after I retired from New York Telephone and I now teach engineering at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. It's a fun job and get to hang with a lot of bright students that push me to keep sharp and stay up to date on engineering issues. During the summers, I spend most weekends teaching sailing and Coastal Navigation for Boston Harbor Sailing Club. I finally got to use my nautical knowledge from my undergraduate years at the Merchant Marine Academy. Plus I picked up a Captains License. That was a thrill to finish something I had started 30 years earlier when I dropped out of the Academy to get married (the first time). College College is way different when you're the instructor as opposed to the student. Software has made the life of the engineering student much simpler and faster. They are able to concentrate on the design of circuits and not get hung up on the computational aspects of the design. That makes them smarter out-of-the-box compared with students of my era. I envy them. When I finished my first lecture on capacitors, I looked at them and made a wish: that someone had explained capacitors to me the way I had just done for them. It was a masterful lecture that in one hour conveyed every conceptually idea (with formulas) they will ever need about capacitors. During the next semester, I take them thru the design and experiments of the first voice communication system by Alexander Graham Bell. We completely model from the electrical domain to the audio domain the first ever speaker made. Then they get to make one. That is fun. Of course, I ask them to take measurements and verify the theory.
