Timothy's Story
After graduation I joined the Navy in October 1961 as a 'kiddie cruiser', that was where if you joined before you turned 18 you would get out the day before you turned 21. The recruiter was good and talked me into applying for the Nuclear Submarine program. I did and extended my enlistment to 6 years for the schooling they gave me. Not being a great student I dropped from the program and sailed aboard the old WWII diesel submarines. Four years out of Key West, Florida and 2 years out of San Diego.
I sailed up and down the east coast, around the Caribbean, 3 sojourns to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and through the Mediterranean visiting France, Italy, Spain, Malta, Sardinia, and others. Then to the west coast and a deployment to the western Pacific during Viet Nam. Visited Yokosuka, Yokohama, Hong Kong, Okinawa, and some places submerged that are still classified. We did get chased out of the other guys port once on a Classified Op,
I married shortly before becoming a civilian again and settled in northern California. I worked nights in a saw mill while attend Shasta JC days on the GI Bill. I was in a serious auto accident where I spent 60 days in traction and 4 months in a body cast. Then 6 months on crutches and a cane. I kept going to school during the recovery period and ended up in the JC for 6 years before I transferred to Chico State to attain a BS in Accounting in ...Expand for more
1976. One good thing from the accident was that my then 2 year old daughter who was with me walked away from it after I threw myself between her and the dash. Another car had run a red light and I hit him going 55 mph.
After graduation from Chico I moved to Fair Oaks, CA (just east of Sacramento) where I worked as an Accountant and Budget Analyst for the Air Force at McClellan AFB until they closed the base. I now have 3 daughters and 6 grand kids (5 girls and 1 boy). I spend my time volunteering in their schools, attending their soccer games, basket ball games, and track meets. I have coached, refereed, and served on the board of recreational soccer clubs. I have served as a PTA President, High school Athletics Booster Club President, and am currently involved with our Submarine Veterans local base. Once a month I go to San Francisco and volunteer as a docent aboard the old WWII submarine Pampanito berthed at Fisherman's Wharf, pier 45.
I love to haunt flea markets, fish, garden, and hunt. My family having a 6,000 acre cattle ranch in north west California provides for some great hunting of deer, pigs, and turkeys. I also enjoy old films, documentaries, war history films, and love to read about submarine warfare and the Special Forces (Green Berets) of Viet Nam. My younger brother, Terry, served as a Green Beret in the Nam 1969-70.
