Tina's Story

I always wanted to be a firefighter when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. I found out that I am afraid of heights, so ladder climbing was definitely out. So I married a firefighter instead. I grew up in Takoma Park, and lived there until I got maried; then purchased a house 2 miles away in Silver Spring, where I still am today. My hero has always been my dad. I just didn't know it until he suffered a stroke in August of 1998. This would change our world for the next 8 years. He was able to get around for a few years with a cane, then he had post stroke seizures that caused permanent damage. They left him bedridden and unable to speak. Soon he wasn't able to swallow, so eating was very difficult. Dad received a feeding tube, there he was the greatest man I ever knew totally unable to communicate with anyone. But that didn't get him down, he never lost his sense of being, or humor. Although he was completely dependent on others he never let on how much he was hurting. standing him and trying to figure out what was wrong but through it all dad stayed strong. That is why he is my hero. When I started working at the FBI, I signed on the line that said I would stay for one year. So now, 35 years later I am still there and loving what I do. Never thought I'd ever say that, but the traveling I've done, the people I've met, has all been worth it. I hope to continue this adventure for years to come. It wouldn't be fair, if I didn't talk about my husband, Rusty (Richard) a Blair Alum as well. We met at the Takoma Park Volunteer Fire Department, my second home!! We got married on the 3rd anniversary of our first date. Four years later, our son, Richard Andrew (another Blair Alum) was born. Six years later, our little girl, Robynn Ashlee-Noelle was born. My life has been a journey, with good times and bad, happy and sad, I wouldn't change a thing. When the going gets tough I have learned that taking a deep breath, counting to three, exhaling and saying, "It's all good!" really helps. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
