Todd's Story

What can I say 30+ years since high school, not enough room here to say it all and not sure ai want the world to see it all. Some good some bad but mostly good. Since 9/11 things changed for us all I imagine. It changed for me. I see our country as different and for the first time I think many others do to. We are vulnerable because we are free. Our government cannot protect us, that is our job and I see us letting each other down now because we are not protecting our country from our government. I wont rant on about that every ones opinion is different. I have learned for over 2 years years in Iraq and now I am in Afghanistan. I watched the news after 9/11 and went crazy because I was just watching so I am participating now, in a limited way but I am here to see the young ones go out every day and do what most think is someone elses responsibility. These young ones are your children and you should be proud. There is no draft and all have volunteered knowing that they will be asked to do hard things and make hard choices. Whether you agree or disagree with why we as a nation have sent...Expand for more
our youth beyond our borders do something for them. They are all heroes. I can tell you that most live in conditions worse that the most desperately poor back home and eat food that you would not want to feed your dog. But they still smile and pull missions every day. They are our future. Send a soldier, marine, sailor or airman a box of cookies or just a simple letter and let them know that they are remembered and respected for the contribution they make to our country. They are making a difference here. We have slept safe since 9/11 because of them. Dont think because there have been no further attacks on our soil that the bad guys are trying. It is you child that is now keeping them busy over here so we dont have to see the violence at home. Those that wish to destroy us are alive and well. George Orwell said it best: "We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm." I am proud to be here with them and share the bad food, bad weather and a joke every once and a while. From FOB Farah, Afghanistan, 3 April 2010
