Todd's Story
Life
Thank you Farmington! When I was
there, I thought it was the last place I
wanted to be. But now, living in Los
Angeles, I can really appreciate
Farmington and New England in
general. LA has innumerable
qualities, but many kids here have a
very different experience than we did.
It seems in any big city it would be
very easy for someone like me, who
was not particularly "academically
oriented" to slip through the cracks.
I remember when I had taken all the
photography classes and wanted to
learn more, they somehow came up
with lights, a view camera and set up
an independent study for me. I hear
stories here about kids having to
steal books to be able to do their
homework because there are not
enough textbooks for all the kids. I

ided I wanted to be a commercial
photographer-- many kids would
have just heard "that is a nice hobby,
but you need to make a living! The
career center showed me it would
not be easy, but it could be done.
Things happen to teenagers, most of
it is our own fault, but when my
parents died when I was 12 and 15,
and I had some trouble with Âthe lawÂ
after that, learned that people cared,
people were patient, people were
supportive. As a result I think I
learned that nothing was impossible,
and I have been able to follow my
passion and travel the world getting
paid to do what I love. If I can raise
my son in safe and supportive
community environment I grew up
with, it may well be the most valuable
thing I can give him. Thank you
