Tom's Story

Life Since graduation from Jay: went to Brooklyn Poly for Aerospace Engineering (intended on going to Mars and beyond), worked for IBM, graduated from Pace U with a degree in Economics, Math minor (I thought about business opportunities on Mars!), worked towards an MBA,in the computer field since 1965, working as an IT Management Consultant (Mars looks even better!) I always wanted to be a Astrophysicist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a unusual idea. As it turns out, they were confused. Fishing, long walks, music, Red Sox games, Jets when they are winning Heroes were Ted Williams, Rocky Marciano and Werner VonBraun. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Brother Bernadine because he let me start school a year early. He was in charge of the schools for the Diocese at the time and visited the schools at least once a year. He would visit St. Francis and I would be called down to the office for a chat. This happened evert year until he passed away. Red Sox are my team, eventhough I spoke to scouts from the Phillies and Mets. Genes have a funny way of appearing. My current age is 65. When I was 12, in H.S., I thought that people my age now would be smarter. I was so completely fooled. My first crush crushed me by marrying someone else. Poor guy! But, who knew back then? As for dressing style, anything that hides my underwear is perfect! The weirdest job I ever had was the first and only night I worked for a large financial company as a third shift computer operator while attending school. I showed up and met the supervisor, who had me take a seat. That was before the midnight shift started. It was a good thing I b...Expand for more
rought a book to read because when the shift changed at 8:00AM, I was still waiting for the supervisor to get back to me! Rather than go home, I went to the Personnel Department and informed them that the job wasn't working out! I share my home with 2 dogs, which I find sufficient because they like living with me.. Since all trophies on the mantel melted in a house fire years ago, I now live in a house without a fireplace. If I had a do-over, it would be to attend a different high school. I attended St. John's Prep for one day. It wasn't the 3 buses I had to take the shortened my stay. It was the threat made by a priest on me and a classmate that drove us out the door and into John Jay. That was a poor choice. We were scouting out the school at St. John's after a quick lunch and were headed for the next class. We walked into the class only to see the priest push a kid's head through the blackboard. As the blood was flowing, the priest saw us and said we were next. I remember looking at each other and running down the hall to the exit, never aware of the 26 pounds of books we were carrying. We reached the first bus and planned to meet the next day at John Jay. When I started John Jay as a freshman, I had classes with Seniors. At 12 years old, I was in shock at what was going on in these classes. No structure or rules to follow. No beatings, though! Continuing on, the classes each year followed this pattern. There were some good teachers and, unfortunately, some bad teachers. There were many disruptions in classes. It was a way of life. Friends I made along the way were revealed to be gang members who were at war with other friends. It was a jungle.
