Tom's Story
Life
After living on both coasts and in Texas, Oklahoma, Okinawa, and Vietnam, I spent the last 30 years in the Detroit area where I retired in 2017 to do photography, ride my bicycles, create music, and counsel a few families in private practice. I am married for the third time (40 years!) and have two adult sons.
Military
I volunteered to work at Pioneer House, a heroin addiction treatment center, because I was so impressed with what they did for a friend called "Crash"--I can't remember his name--who went through treatment there when I had just arrived at 2nd Civil Affairs Company. Some months later, when I was working there, Crash came back through again. He'd relapsed, as many of our guys did. But this time the treatment stuck, and he came back to become staff. Other staff I can identify included John Bockoven (?), who was one of the group who got the place started, Mike Jett, and Steve Bennett, who was my tutor and guide throughout my period working there.

time at Pioneer House, Spring through Fall of 1971, we were still an amnesty-based, voluntary, drug-free withdrawal program before the guys from Washington came in, instituted mandatory urine tests, and turned Pioneer House into a methodone program. I got out just in time.
Academic
As a hot-shot scholarship recipient at the University of Denver in 1962, I was shocked to find that I didn't perform very well in college (might have been the clubs and choral groups, might have been the fraternity and the alcohol). After 2 years, scholarship lost, I left and joined the Army.
Once I got back to the states in 1971 I fulfilled a long-time dream--went back to school and finished a degree in Early Childhood Education. I taught for 4 years in Washington, DC, then went back to school again for a Master's degree in Psychology at an Antioch branch in Maryland. I felt the itch again in 1983 and returned for a PhD at Texas Tech University.
Since 1988 I've been a full time professor.
