Tom's Story

For my friends checking this out, thanks for stopping by. Not real good about keeping in touch so feel free to admonish me for that. My bad. After leaving the good memories of Campolindo and the Bay Area after graduation, headed north to Washington to attend Whitworth College (Now a University). Always was enamored with the great northwest after going through Outward Bound Mountaineering Survival School up in the Cascades for a month. Learned so much as life's classrooms don't have to be confined by four walls. Slam dunk course in Wilderness First aid. Took a guy in 23 miles by hand made stretcher into a ranger station for medivac with a fractured knee from a rockslide while climbing. Another chopped his thumb off with the blade of an ice ax during an emergency exit down ice fields during a snowstorm and whiteout. You get a whole new perspective on life when you come close to losing your life while hanging on a rope in a glacier crevasse. My instructor roped up with me after that for thinking quickly and not panicking. While going up to college on a track and field scholarship also got a chance to play varsity football for Coach Hugh Campbell who has since been inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of fame. Several of our team went on to play in the NFL. Also got to run with some former Olympians who took me under wing as the "albino" cause white kids weren't supposed to run that fast. Enjoyed my time at Whitworth with great professors, classes and elected and served as dorm president of McMillan Hall which is still a historic icon on campus. Proud to have attended and graduate from that institution. Learned more about myself during that time than I ever did out of the books I read and papers I wrote. While I trained to be a teacher, did not take it up right away as the professors and instuctors I respected were the ones that actually brought the subjects to life and not just recite out of a lesson plan. Took a couple of years being a renaissance kind of guy to see what I could do. Could have taken over my Dad's Construction and Development Corporation but I was never good about having things handed to me. Things meant more if I had to work for them. Some would think that stupid, but I will never pass up an adventure and a challenge. Worked in the financial district in SF working for Transamerica for a couple of years with my uncle as Exec VP of the corporation. I Probably could have made lots more money but I would have become an alcoholic if I stayed as a fast track manager. Business usually ended up at a bar and bar tabs weekly could run up to $300 plus per week. Wild and crazy days doing a lot of road travel for business trips. In my off time, hiking and climbing, playing in rock bands, hitting concerts and always working odd jobs. Moved back up to Spokane and put my mechanical skills to work managing a couple of auto repair and tire shops and was a good way to keep my rigs in good shape as a bonus. Took over as general contractor for a friend's parents at the time and finished building a fancy A-frame house out on Long Lake with big basalt fireplaces and removing the standard stairs and installed a circular stairway for all three floors. Quite the adventure. As my Boss man of the tire stores ran for congress and lost, he needed his old job back so the writing was on the wall that my employment was in jeopardy. Decided to make a change and walked into KXLY Television and Radio station who I had bought time from while managing the shops and ran into the owner of Apple Broadcasting. Told him I saw a empty desk and I could have my stuff moved in and start the next day. Gutsy move but it paid off as he told me I was either crazy smart or crazy stupid and he would take a chance on me. Did some on the air work but worked advertising and found out I was pretty good at it. Did a lot of on-air production and learned the operation of an ABC television affiliate. One of the other benefits of attending Whitworth was meeting my future wife on campus. Didn't know it at the time but we would meet again about two years later at a home bible study. After a couple of trips afterward to the IHOP with the group for coffee, the menu expanded as Lorraine became my adventure partner some 44 years now. It has been quite the sojourn since then. Worked for Lorraine's dad in the Tri-Cities area managing some more Goodyear tire and truck centers and some of my service calls took me out into "The Area" (spooky music in the background) Listed as the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, it was like a science fiction movie come to life. Government Security clearances, hand geometry, retinal scan, highly trained armed guards, radiation monitoring , underground tanks and vaults and protective suits. It was for years one of the country's best secrets. I was intrigued. When stopping in at Music Machine, one of the high end music stores here, I was checking out a new electronic keyboard/synthesizer and was told by the sales guy, if you don't work at "the area", you won't be able to afford this. Hmmm, Hanford site equals money...That inspired me to study up on all the info I could find on the site. As I did not have inside connections, it took me two years of pestering the employment offices of the contractors working there. Finally I got an interview and in some cases knew more information about the site activities than the interviewers did by pulling up news articles in the public library. No internet back then. I got my chance in October of 1982 hiring on with United Nuclear Corporation as an operating engineer at Hanford's historic N-Reactor. The unit provided special nuclear materials for our government as well as radioisotopes for cancer/medical treatment and research. The by-product secondary system steam was piped to the Hanford Generation Plant turbine...Expand for more
s resulting in 860 megawatts of electrical power to the Bonneville power grid lighting up Seattle and surrounding areas. After qualifying as a nuclear/chemical operator in each of the reactor support facilities, I was promoted to Operations supervisor and qualified as a control room supervisor completing my two years of classroom, simulator, oral board exams and stick time in the control room. Spent five years there helping with the protection of the U.S by processing and supplying the military which much needed materials that serve as a deterrent in this crazy age of world politics of factions that would rather harm than protect our freedoms. A lot of brilliant minds contributed to the nuclear age in secret and classified facilities hidden all over. Each with their own story. You might pick up that I'm passionate about what I've been able to be part of. While not on the front lines, like our military, definitely have put my body in dangerous conditions with the intent of serving this great country. While not being hit by bullets or IED's, we're constantly monitored for possible future cancer for the countless hours we spent inside radiation zones for refueling, maintenance and upgrades on the reactor core and system components so we could process spent nuclear fuel. Was asked to be on audit teams evaluating other DOE labs and facilities to protect against any perceived threat from outside or inside sources that could negatively impact safe operations or the public. This meant having to work with some very smart and capable experts in the field that expanded from domestic to international projects. High pressure, high visibility and no margin for error. Speaking of history, You may remember other events such as Three mile island and Chernobyl. All inspectors had to study these case timelines in massive detail. While already completing $80 million in safety upgrades on the N Reactor and plant, the panic and concern that arose from those emergencies forever impacted support of nuclear power. The writing was on the wall that "N" 's future was shutting down quickly. After a year of being put on warm standby, congress issued DOE an ultimatum to shut it down. Quickly jumped ship to Safeguards and Security division and got to do a lot of secret squirrel stuff. It is safe to say though, that with all the Intel, research and things that go on behind the wing curtains that you don't see, is a reason we all sleep better at night. Have been able to train DOE, contractors, military and emergency responders for WMD scenarios as they are a reality to be dealt with. The Volpentest HAMMER Federal Training Center on the internet will give you an idea of my career. I actually appear in a video as one of several Drill Coordinators as part of the Incident Command Structure. I was a trained responder and instructor traing specialized teams for restoring electrical and oil and gas pipelines after hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Gustav. In short, 36 years out there and I may write a book someday as I have been able to experience some unique opportunities. With my background in operations, safeguards and security I was recruited to serve as Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for multiple production and process facilities, responsible for running and evaluating emergency drills and training of response personnel. This got me assigned to four tours of duty with the DOE Tiger Teams and Facilities Evaluation Board running and controlling drills and exercises across the country. This also expanded to having to maintain certs for medic/ first aid training even working with military for CBRNE and WMD. Retired in 2018 but miss the crew but not the headaches. And yes, Area 51 does exist. I've taught classes at the Nevada Test Site and 22 other National labs along with teaching at the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab. Spent 5 years traveling every other week teaching and conducting compliance inspections reporting to DOE HQ and to POTUS. My loving wife and kids have supported/endured my exhaustive schedule of work/travel and my various bands I've played with still rocking out after all these years. We are very proud of our two daughters; the oldest Ashley married Brett and they have two fiery red-head grand daughters that are already a handful as teen agers. Ashley has followed in my footsteps working secret squirrel stuff with one of the National labs but taken it international with her security team. Our youngest daughter Kristin recently found "Mr. Right" and got married in a small civil ceremony at the Spokane County Courthouse last December. In April we went over to our place in Hawaii to have them do a rededication of vows on Hapuna beach with our good friend who is a pastor outside of Kona. Life is good, can't complain. We now have a grandson from Kristin and Christopher this last February and what a privilege and an honor to have little Tommy named after me! Love being a husband, Dad and Papa. The Good Lord has continued to watch over and provide. Eleven years ago after searching all over Washington and Oregon, Lorraine and I were fortunate to find a lake cabin that has been our sanity project to retreat to when we need sanctuary. Lots of fix-em-up projects now that we have the shop built. Plan on doing a lot of travelling. If you're ever up in the neighborhood in Washington, will give you directions. Would be good to reconnect. Hey thanks again for taking the time if you made it this far. If you find yourself with some spare time, give me a tag. Would be super to hear from you and see what you've been up to! For those of you that made it to our Class of 72 In- person Reunion September 17th 2022.!
