Tom's Story
Life
Singing is life; the rest is just details. I wish I had discovered that and participated in singing at Hermitage High. Singing is FUNdamental to life. You cannot remain unhappy while you are singing. Luckily, I discovered barbershop harmony when I was about 46.
I enlisted in the Navy right out of high school (1960) because the school counselors were convinced I would never make anything of myself. Six years later the Navy disagreed with those counselors and sent me to Officer Candidate School. I was commissioned in 1967 and unofficially retired (on disability) in 1977.
I then started my undergraduate work at Marietta College. I finished my law studies at Ohio Northern U. in 1983 and was at the same time officially discharged from the Navy.
Four years later I found myself in love with barbershop harmony and the rest is history.
If you haven't tried barbershop harmony, please email me and I'll show you how to contact the men in your area who ...Expand for more
are already having fun singing.
Workplace
I started my first business (except for paper routes) while in high school: a photography studio catering to i.d.'s for private pools and clubs.
The U.S. Navy came next--for 17 years. California, Maryland, Morocco, Florida, Nebraska, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vietnam, and Washington DC, have all been home -- along with a number of ships at sea.
While in college (1977-1980) after the Navy, I was owner/operator of a pizza shop & bakery. After college came law school, then I opened a private practice with a major emphasis on criminal law.
I was recruited by the Ohio Public Defender to take a position inside the Marion Correctional Institution in 1991. I continue to be an Assistant State Public Defender for Ohio, but I am now a telecommuter -- working most days from the office in my home.
I retired from the O.P.D. November, 2012, and no longer practice law. I SING--choir, quartet, chorus, and a few solos.
