Tom's Story

August 2012 I am 55. Geez, Do I feel old. I been married to my wonderful wife Christy for 8 years. I have two awesome children, TJ, 30 and Allison 24. TJ lives in Laguna Hills and works for a company in Irvine and staying on for a couple nights a week as waiter/bartender for Outback Steakhouse. My daughtter just graduated with a Masters degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Alabama after getting her Bachelors Degree in 2010. The best part is that she did it without getting a student loan. She also got her 1st job, beating out out 15 candidaes with Masters, before she got her diploma . June 4 was the first day of her career as a juvenile probabation officer for the court system in Alberville,Alabama. We are very proud of her. I also have a stepdaughter, Briana who graduated from Mater Dei High School with a GPA of over 4. She starts UC Irvine in September and is living on campus. Yeah for us, no kids. I grew up in Claremont where I lived until I was 16. After my sophmore year at Claremont High School my family moved to Orange County and the city of Dana Point. It was tough changing high schools after spending most of years growing up in Claremont but I went 2 years to Dana Hills High where I graduated in 1975. In 2011, after 32 years of employment with the same company, going back to college and getting my bachelors at age 30, marriage, and kids I retired as a result of being diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease. I'm just taking easy now and taking the time to travel when I can as its what I like to do with my wife. After taking our kids on many trips from baseball with my son and cruises with the girls ove the last 5 years we decided to start a new trend. We celebrated by taking 10 days to ourselves to the Hawaiian islands in July. August 2013 In June my wife Christy graduated from the University of Phoenix with a Masters Degree in Education. Between my wife and daughter I am going to develop a inferiority complex. I am very proud of her. Her AA, Bachelors, Masters, and Teaching Credential make my Bachelors Degree seem like BS. Oh it is a BS. I am so happy for her since she has to support me. She is the breadwinner in the household. Shh!! Don't want her to know that. My wife and I got back from Hawaii in mid July after spending 10 days on Oahu and Maui. It was our second trip in as many years and I told her next year that were trying something different. Schools starting so my wife is back at work. It also means that it is college football season and Alabama is gearing up for its quest for 3 national titles in a row and 4 of last 5. I can't wait. Hopefully I can get back to Tuscaloosa to see my daughter and see a game. The Dodgers are on an unbelievable roll so all is good in the sports world. My kids are doing well. I wish I could say the same for me. I am slowing down according to my wife at 56, mostly do to Parkinsons Disease, but I have a lot to live for and a lot of living and traveling still to do. January 2014 Another year come and gone. I thought that when I retired, the years would go by at slower pace. But it's the opposite. Maybe because I'm enjoying my free time. I planned my Dad's 90th Birthday Party in November with 60 guests. He has altizmers so he doesn't remember, but his relatives will for sure. He just had artery by-pass to his leg this month and is recovering slowly. In March I will be in Arizona for Spring Traning. I have to go to see my cousin in the Kansas City organization. He has played for AAA Omaha the past 2 years and getting called up a couple times to KC. Also I will have to Check out the L.A. Dodgers and maybe the Angels. We are hoping to make our 3rd trip to Hawaii in as many years but it is going to have to wait till December. We are going to be remodling our house starting with hardwood floors upstairs and on stairs and tile in the bathrooms when we return from spring training. Love retirement and the start of the baseball season. My kids are doing well. My son is back in the restaurant business again as general manager of Buffalo Wild Wings. My daughter is in her 2nd year as a Juvenile Probation Officer in Alabama. Maybe some day she will return to CA. My stepdaughter is finishing her 2nd year at UCI in computer science. My wife is a technology teacher and the major breadwinner. Somebody's got to support me!! August 2014 Another summer come and gone. I enjoy my vacations. But Chis had other ideas. My wife had to have new floors so there goes the vacation budget. She now wants to get the kitchen done next. We did go for 3 nights to Monterey in June and 3 nights to Las Vegas in July. Monterey was nice and Las Vegas is not my idea of a vacation. Next summer will be different. I am going to look at a cruise. It has been about 4 years after cruising for 5 consecutive years. After Ally's graduation cruise in 2010, I had DBS brain surgery for Parkinson's Disease in May 2011 and spent the summer recovering. My wife wanted to go to Hawaii in 2012 and 2013. Chris doesn't know yet but I'm planning 2015. Family is pretty much the same. My cousin Ryan Verdugo was traded at the all-star break to the Boston Red Sox from the Kansas City Royals after 2 1/2 years in the organization. He was drafted by the Giants out of LSU in 2008 and spent 3 years with San Francisco farm system until the trade to the Royals. He had 2 big league call ups in KC and made one start for the Royals in 2012 during an all-star year at Omaha (AAA). In 2013 he had an elbow injury that sidlined him for the most of the year but came back in August to get his 2nd championship ring (AAA-Omaha Stormchasers, Class A advanced-San Jose Giants) in the minors. He pitched in the Mexican winter leagues last year and suffered another injury. He came back in May and was throwing the best he has ever thrown as a professional. Now he is a member of the Pawtucket (AAA) PawSox and has to prove himself again. He doing great and Boston Red Sox are in transition. College football is upon us. USC and Alabama are my teams and as always Alabama is looking promising. And of course baseball is coming down to pennant races. Boston is rebuilding but the LA teams are back. January 2015 Can you believe it's 2015? Almost 40 years since I graduated from Dana Hills High School. Where has the time gone? Last year my wife and I celebrated our 10th anniversary. My dad turned 91 years old. This year my parents will be celebrati...Expand for more
ng there 65th anniversary this year in June. Christy wants to redo the kitchen so there goes another summer vacation. Good thing spring training starts in 6 weeks. My cousin signed with the Oakland A's in November when he was declared a free agent. I guess he wants to play "Moneyball". He was pitching great last year for Omaha AAA(KC), then Pawtucket AAA(Boston) when traded at the all-star break. Having 2 call ups with for KC, this could be the year he makes the roster. It was a down year for USC but the future looks good. Alabama on the other hand has always got a good team. The question is how far will they go. Ohio State was not going to be stopped. What does 2015 bring? We will see. August 2015 Summer is ending. My wife is going back to school. High school that is. Who says you can't go back to high school? She got a job as Assistant Director of MDTV at Mater Dei High School. During the summer we went on vacation to Jamaiaca for a week. My cousin got traded by the Oakland A's to the LA Angels and is at AAA Salt Lake City. My wife is getting that new kitchen, she has been wanting. Football season is starting so all is good. Now I have another football team to follow besides USC and Alabama. My wife's school Mater Dei has a great team plus she has to be at home games so that is where I will be on Friday nights. Maybe they will put CHHS or DHHS on the schedule. January 2016 A new year that I hope will be as good as 2015. Christy and I went to Jamaica for a week at an all-inclusive resort and had a great time. When we got back Christy was determined to get the kitchen remodeled and is just about finished. She loves her new job on faculty at Mater Dei. I continue to be a man of leisure but always find lots to do. Now planning a Mediterranean cruise from Rome to Greece and Turkey. U of Alabama are national champs again making my daughter, an 2012 alum, and her dad happy. My cousin is a free agent again after signing with the Oakland A's last year and getting traded to the Los Angeles Angeles at midseason. The LA Rams are back and I guess I can be a homer again. Just got back from Las Vegas where we stayed at the very ornate and posh Venitian Hotel. My wife planned it as she has a friend who plays keyboard for John Fogerty. We saw Michael Jackson One by Cirque at Mandaly Bay and it was great. The following night we saw Fogerty at the Venitian and it was the best concert I've ever seen. I guess that['s why they sold out 8 straight shows. We also got to meet the band after the show and hang out in the dressing room for snacks and cake celebrating their run. 2016 is off to a great start......Just got an email for a 1974-1977 Dana Hills High School Reunion In April. Hope to see former DHHS Dolphins at El Niguel CC. Seotenber 2016 Summer is over, the wife is back in school, and I am enjoying the start of football season and the conclusion of baseball season. Christy and I decided to return to Hawaii for the 3rd time in 4 years. We spent 8 nights on Maui and Kauai in July. Christy is starting her 2nd year at Mater Dei as a teacher. Someone has got to support me. The Mater Dei football team looks like it is going to be a one of the best it's had in years. The Rams are back in LA, so it kind of surreal. In a few weeks I will be going to Portland to the World Parkinsons Congress to learn about Parkinsons Disease, the current issues, and the future outlook. Hopefully that will be encouraging. January 2017 Can you believe it classmates of 1975 are turning 60. I don't feel it mentally but physically is another story. February 11th is DHHS annual baseball alumni game. I can remember the games like it was yesterday but playing like it is quite different. It is fun and have a great time. Football season is winding up and LA goes from 0 teams for twenty years to 2 teams. U of Alabama (my daughter alma mater) lost the Championship game, but that is Ok because they won so many in the last decade. USC (my parents alma mater) won the Rose Bowl for the 1st time in awhile which was nice. My dad doesn't remember who won because he has azlhiemers at 93. Baseball season is starting soon with spring training starting in February. My kids are doing well and my step daughter is graduating from UCI this year. Christy loves teaching at Mater Dei and is half way through her 2nd year. I anticipate another great year!! August 2017 The last 6 months have been the worst, health wise of my life. First I had a stroke on March 25th and spent the next 3 days at Mission hospital because it was the result of brain hemorrhage. They transferred me to Palm Terrace facility in Laguna Woods. In the 2 weeks I was there I became dehydrated and one day from having dialysis. The nursing was rude and abusive. My wife had me sent back to the hospital. After a stay there I was moved to Lake Forest skilled nursing and rehab center. I was there over 3 months until July 11. In that time I rushed to Mission hospital again for a bad reaction to a pain medication. Before all this I could walk without assistance, after being released from Lake Forest I could walk with a walker/cane. On August 18 my physical therapist noticed a decline in my walking and it got worse and I couldn't walk at all. I went to my neurologist and my batteries in stimulaters were dying. I just had surgery at Hoag hospital in Newport Beach. I am going to learn to walk again. This sucks. My wife had to sell our house while I was in rehab because we lived in 2-story house. It has been one thing after another. We currently in an apartment in Irvine while we look for a 1-story condo to buy. Hopefully the rest of 2017 will be kinder to us. MARCH 2018 It's 2018 and the holidays behind us. We found a home to buy in December and moved in January 15, 2018. in Mission Viejo. It's across from Lake and adjacent from the golf course. 2017 was a tough year for Christy and I as I had a stroke and had to learn to walk among other things. The Doctors said we should find a 1-story residence. We sold the house in RSM and rented a place in Irvine closer to Christy's teaching job at Mater Dei High School until we could find house. That was mid July after almost 7 months in rehab. The new house is shaping up but I would be lying if I said I did'nt miss RSM. In 2018 I hope to stay less out of the hospital and healthy. June 13, 2019 I am in stage 4 PD now its getting worse. I trying to deal with it. Thank God I have my wife at side. She is the best thing to happen to me. I am leaving classmates this summer as it is getting difficult to manage.
