Tom's Story

After graduation I dodged the draft. I joined the Navy and volunteered for the Submarine Service. I was sent to Key West for Sonar school. After sub school in New London, Ct., I served aboard the USS Whale (SSN 638) stationed in Charleston. While aboard there I was able to visit Holy Loch, Scotland, Bremerhave, Germany, and Athens. I was then transferred to the brand new USS Silversides (SSN 679) which was the 100th nuclear submarine. I was able to spend my 20th birthday at the North Pole. I also got to visit the Bahamas, the Virgin Is., Puerto Rico, and Rota, Spain. Upon my discharge in 1973, I spent the summer in Norwich, Ct. (Benedict Arnold's hometown) before moving back to De. I worked in various factory jobs before finally getting a job at Chrysler in Newark. After a few years playing robot I decided to move back to Key West. While I was there I built 50 ft. fiberglass boats, and also tutored elementary children in math and reading. I also gave lessons in the Duval Crawl. I was able to buy a sailboat, and lived aboard. It was an idyllic life. Temperatures were always warm. My mother died in 1981, so I sailed to Bea...Expand for more
ufort, S.C. This is a beautiful antebellum town, which I encourage everyone to visit. While there I became a bartender and eventually became a bar manager. I married in 1983, and honeymooned in the Bahamas, aboard our sailboat. We returned to Beaufort and my daughter, Rebecca , was born in 1985. In 1987 we sailed to the Caribbean, and cruised the islands for a few months before returning to Key West. I got a job as bar manger at the LaConcha Hotel (the tallest buiding in Key West), and my son Tom was born 1989. In 1992 we sailed up the west coast of Fl. to Ft. Myers and crossed the state via the Okeechobee waterway. We settled in Vero Beach and I got a job a manager of a bar and liquor store. In 1994 we sold our boat and bought a beautiful old Florida bungalow. My children went to Vero Beach schools, played in the band and graduated from the Charter high school. Becca attended Murray St. in Ky. and Tom attends Indian River C.C. He is also a chef at an Italian restaurant. My wife and I seperated in 2007 and I moved to the mountains of Pa. I now live in Pottsville and am working with people with a mental health diagnosis.
