Tom's Story
Life
Tom and Marilyn (nee Benson) married in 1970 and have lived in Seattle, WA since 1974. I worked at the Univ. of Washington for almost 30 years in a variety of capacities involved with student services, classroom support, and educational research and testing. I retired in 2002. I worked at East Shore Unitarian Church as Administrator for 5 years and then at University Unitarian Church as Business Manager until June. Now, I'm kinda', sorta retired.
Marilyn is representative for Bensonwood (Bensonwood, dot, com). She telecommutes from Seattle to New Hampshire every work day. (No traffic there.) She writes and edits information about this premier timberframe company featured on This Old House. She talks to prospective customers and assists them to plan building their new homes. She tours the country and photographs the completed Bensonwwod homes for their website and possible publication.
Tom & Marilyn live in an old home (1921) just north of the UW campus. We love to travel and look forward to having the time and $ to actually do it. We have been all over Washington and spent time visiting family in Colorado, Florida, and New Hampshire. We particularly like visiting the Washington coast and Olympic Peninsula. In 2004, we went to England for a couple of weeks. It was wonderful. The highlight was being the "show & tell" objects at an "elementary" school in Birmingham, which has primarily Pakistani and Afghani children. It was an informative visit and the children had many questions about our "cowboy" Pr...Expand for more
esident. In 2006, we went to visit Matt (see below) in Ghana where he lives and works. It was a wonderful visit and an astounding country. We had to redefine our concept of "poverty." By Western standards, much of the country is very poor, but the people have so much in their sense of family and community, it is humbling. In 20010 we took a trip to Scandahovia (Iceland, Norway, & Sweden). In Oslo, we had the joy of attending Matt's wedding celebration and meeting our new granddaughter Ingrid Akosua Larssen Taggart. Ingrid's mom, Astrid is a professor of Computer Science at Ashesi University. We returned to Ghana in 2011 to visit Matt, wife Astrid, Ingrid, and new grandson Benjamin Owusu. 2012 found us in Romania visiting Marta. In 2013 we spent August in Oslo where Matt, Astrid and the children have moved.
We have 2 children. Matthew lived and worked in Accra, Ghana as the Dir. of Development for a private college, Ashesi University (ashesi, dot, org). The college graduated its first class in Dec. 2005 and broken ground on a new campus outside of Accra. Astrid taught computer science at the college. They have now moved to Oslo where Astrid works for a consulting firm and Matt is a graduate student in international development.
Our daughter Marta also lives in Seattle. She worked at Frazier Technology Ventures for 3 years. Subsequently she worked for RealNetworks at their headquarters on the Seattle waterfront. She then joined the Peace Corp and spent 2 years in Romania. She is now working for Amazon.
