Tom's Story
College
I majored in Mechanical Engineering Technology at O.I.T. in Klamath Falls, OR. I graduated with my B.S. in 1986. I played football for 4 years. I started part-time my sophomore year at tight end, and started full-time my last two years at offensive guard. The highlights I will remember from football were finishing 14th in the nation my freshman year and scoring a touchdown my sophomore year (a big deal to an offensive lineman). The fun things I remember were some of the parties in Klamath Falls, Moore Park in the Spring, and going to Topsy Reservoir to jump of the rocks into the reservoir.
Workplace
Precision Castparts manufactures jet engine components, land-based power generation components, and medical implants (knees, hips, etc.). These parts must be dimensionally verified to customer specifications. My job is to write programs to inspect these parts using a CMM (coordinate measuring machine). This machine is similar to a CNC, except it measures the part instead of machining it. Customers include G.E., Pratt-Whitney, Rolls-Royce, Boeing, Lockheed, Martin-Marietta, etc.

ascinated me. I went to boot camp for 13 weeks in San Diego, CA in October of 1988 (Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, and Camp Pendleton near Oceanside, CA). In January of 1989 I spent 9 weeks at Camp Lejeune, NC for combat engineering school. I then returned home and was placed in the Salem, OR 6th Engineer Support Battalion. December ('90) my unit was activated for Desert Storm. We spent a month at Camp Pendleton, and then the next 5 months in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. I was there for the entire air campaign and ground war, including combat operations in Kuwait at the onset of the ground war. I earned my Combat Action Ribbon during the war for ground operations in Kuwait. Other awards included the National Defense ribbon, Southwest Asia Service Medal w/3 bronze stars, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Unit Commendation, Liberation of Kuwait Medals from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, I returned home in April of '91, and was discharged from active duty in October of '91. I will always cherish my time in the Corps. The men I served with were some of the most dedicated, trustworthy patriots I will ever know. God bless the Marine Corps and Semper Fi!
