Tom's Story
Tom (Blingum 1961) now lives in Estes Park, Colorado and is married to Susan Adell Gapter. Tom's schools include Burlingame High School. Tom later graduated from UC Berkeley (Business Admin). Tom served with U.S. Air Force in southeast Asia, flying with an intelligence crew near the DMZ for a year. He left the USAF in Febr., 1970, and entered a Master of Public Administration program at University of Colorado, Boulder. After graduating, he worked for the cities of Medford, Oregon, and Greeley, Colorado before becoming city manager in Oxford, Ohio (Miami University town) and East Lansing, Michigan (MSU town). Tom and Betsy (deRoos, class of 1961) had two wonderful sons: Tiyler, born in 1970, and Evan, born in 1974. In 1994, he opened a municipal management consulting business in Michigan. In December, 2000, Tom married Susan Gapter, a friend of of Tom's and Betsy's whom they met in Greeley, Colorado, in 1974 and whose husband had died in 1999. After Sue retired from her CPA firm in 2003, they worked together in national municipal consulting until both retired in 2011. They have lived in Estes Park, CO, since 2009 where they built a house designed by Tom's brother Alex (Blingum 1958) and are active with non-profits and with many grandchildren. Together, they have travelled to Ireland, southeast Asia, New Zealand, Australia, Greece and Istanbul, Tanzania, B.C. and Alberta, and a Danube and Rhine River cruise. They love living in the mountains just outside of Rocky Mtn. National Park, hiking and camping. They and their home welcome friends from both California and Colorado, as well as many other friends made in many places since high school.
