Tom's Story
Life
Graduated from University of Southern California in 1981 with a bachelor in political science. Joined Peace Corps in July of '81 and was sent to Mali, West Africa, where I ended up working on a wheat irrigation project outside of Timbuktu. After I finished Peace Corps in 1983, I joined CARE and went to Chad, initially to distribute food aid and then to manage reconstruction projects after the '80-83 civil war. I left Chad in mid-1985 and started a master's program in irrigation and hydrology at the University of California Davis. After running out of money in 1987, went back to Chad for 2 more years to work on an irrigation project near Lake Chad and to do research for my master's thesis. wife-to-be, Rose, who was pursuing a Ph.D at UF. Got a job with an environmental consulting firm and focused on doing environmental assessments for the World Bank and other international funding agencies for power plants and other industrial facilities in a lot of different places. Meanwhile, Rose and I started an organic farm here in 1993 (she grew up on a vegetable farm), which is still going strong as Rosie's Organic Farm. Jumped ship in late 1995 from the environmental firm as they were getting bought out and kid number 1 was on the way---to my current job as hydrologist for the Suwannee River Water Management District.
