Tom's Story
Life
After earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tri-State University I began my working career in 1965 in the engineering department of Wheelabrator in Mishawaka.
In 1969 I married Betty Tabor, a 1964 graduate of Penn High School, who was also working at Wheelabrator, and we had a new house built in Osceola. I am proud to have been cubmaster of Osceola's only Cub Scout Pack for 12 years.
We have one son, David, who is married and lives with his wife and two young sons in their new house in Fortville, just east of Indianapolis. David graduated from Penn High School and Ball State University and now works in marketing at a video editing company in Indianapolis where they have prepared many videos for ESPN Sports.
At the time Wheelabrator closed the doors and moved to Georgia in 1987 I was manager o...Expand for more
f the Standard Products Group but without a job after 22 years with the company.
After a short employment with Elkhart Machine and Tool I began working at PiRod Tower Company in Plymouth in 1992. My position was Designer, and with the aid of CAD computer equipment I created many designs for towers and antenna mounts including two designs that were patented.
In the year 2001 I had my left thumb amputated to stop the growth and spread of a cancerous tumor. I feel very lucky that I remain cancer free at this time.
In April of 2005 I decided to retire from working and spend my time gardening at a new house that my wife and I had built on five acres in Plymouth. Betty continues her work as a librarian in the children's department of the downtown Mishawaka public library where she has been for the past 20 years.
