Tom's Story

I loved living in Boulder and have vivid memories of school buses bringing grade school classmates to our farm south of town, as well as school plays, float building, choir concerts and movies in historic Chautauqua Auditorium. After attending college in Southern California, I moved to the San Fernando Valley (in Los Angeles) to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. I simply had to get away from all that Colorado snow and follow a few of my crazy dreams. Through the years I've worn many hats, but always managed something in the television or motion picture fields. I started with NBC testing television shows including "Fame" "St. Elsewhere" and "Knight Rider." Moving on to supervise research screenings for Universal, Paramount, Tri Star and 20th Century Fox Studios, I was involved in the evolution of films ranging from "ET" to "Steel Magnolias," "Out of Africa" to "Back To The Future." At some point I attempted a brief stint doing extra work in movies and even had a bit part in a TV-Movie that starred Cicely Tyson. However, changing costumes in freezing dressing-trailers at 5 in the morning was simply a little too glamorous for the likes of me. And yes, that was me dancing with Dolly Parton on her TV show. How scary is that? I don't know that I'll ever be sure how that happened. I always had an interest in writing and somehow managed to publish a book on Julie Andrews in 1995. I've since contributed to several other entertainment books, and I hope to do others in the future when time allows. They are extremely time-consuming. or television documentaries for PBS and the revered A&E series "Biography." I'm now living in Burbank, where I worked nearly 5 years as an archivist for Bob Hope. Working with Fairview High classmate Jan Morrill, we cataloged thousands of awards, souvenirs, scripts and photos for donation to the Library of Congress. It was truly an amazing history lesson of the 20th century and rather a tough act to follow. One day I remember sitting at a desk topped by two Academy Awards, two Emmy Awards and five People's Choice Awards. It was a parade of artifacts ranging from President Franklin Roosevelt to Kermit the Frog, all in a day's work. We managed to complete the project well before Bob Hope's 100th Birthday Celebration, and that was an event I will never forget. Lately I've been working in the production of special edition DVDs. I've contributed to the Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary set for Disney and special box sets of "Hogan's Heroes," "Gunsmoke" and "The Wild, Wild West" for CBS. I'm currently slaving away on DVD sets of the old "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" for Time/Life, best remembered as the classic variety show that CBS canceled during a censorship controversy in 1969. Of course the episodes all seem extremely tame by today's standards, and they have great musical performances by The Doors, Mama Cass, and Ray Charles, just to name a few. I love to travel, and desperately manage to fit in about two trips every year. I always visit my folks in Boulder every Christmas. It's the one time I can endure that freezing Colorado snow. Finally, I enjoy keeping in touch with former classmates. Obviously!
