Tommy's Story
Life
After graduating from Southwest in 1971 I started my college education at Macon Junior. I joined the Army National Guard in Feb 1972 and remained an active member for 8-years and then transferred to the USAR for an additional 8-years of inactive service. I attended OCS in 1974-75. I left the military with the rank of Captain. After my 6-months active duty for training was completed in 1972, I returned to MJC where I finished my degree. I then attended Georgia College where I received my BBA degree with a major in accounting. My local claim to fame is I was the 4th employee and 1st native Maconite hired by Brown & Williamson Tobacco. I married Babs Picklesimer in 1974 and we are still happily married today with 3 wonderful sons. Babs and I moved to Marietta in 1978 where I worked as the accounting manager for a small manufacturing company. While living in the Atlanta area, I sat for and passed the CPA exam. I later became the assistant controller for Bekaert Steel Wire Corp. in Rome. Bekaert promoted me to Division Controller and we moved to Van Buren, Arkansas in 1981. During our stay in Arkansas I earned my MBA degree from the University of Arkansas. Our next move was to Sellersburg, Indiana (15 miles across the Ohio River ...Expand for more
from Louisville, Ky) where I joined Haas Cabinet Co. as their Corporate Controller and later as their Vice President of Finance. We've been in Indiana since 1984. After working for Haas, I became the Executive Vice President and CFO for Key Communications Service in New Albany, Indiana. In 1998 two other senior managers and I purchased KCS and later merge it into a public company. I stayed on and continued to run the company as its President until June 2004 when I repurchased a division of the company, Key Electronics. God has been so good to my family and me. We thank him everyday for the blessings he has poured out to us. I've been financially able to retire since I was 45 years old but still enjoy the challenges of running a company. Our sons are now grown. Jared, our oldest is a video editor for The Christian Network in Nashville, Tenn. Justin, our middle son graduated from Purdue University in December 2004 with a BS in Nuclear Engineering. He is a Naval officer serving on the USS VIRGINIA attack submarine based in Groton, CT. Our youngest son, Josh is a student at Indiana University SE and works with me at the company. We still miss all of our old friends from Georgia and always enjoy speaking with them every change we get.
