Tony's Story

Life Kelley, my wife of over five years and our 3 year old son split our time between Whistler, BC and Sammamish. We both have jobs where we can telecommute frequently, so we're lucky to be able to spend so much time at Disneyland for grownups (and the kid loves it too!) School Sadly, HS was probably my peak academically speaking. It seams the older I get the more I regress. My toddler has a longer attention span than I do. College I certainly messed around quite a bit in college (this really cost my parents plenty!), and never really got my act together until the end. I started off close to home at UW where I commuted. I didn't handle the freedom too well (although I really didn't do anything that anyone else did - I just didn't handle it well). I ended up leaving the UW for WSU for my SO year (it was that or wait to get kicked out). Oddly, I was more out of control, but was able to boost my grades to return to the UW to graduate. While I had a degree, I didn't earn a degree in anything that would lead to a career. After 4 yrs, my parents had had enough, and they sent me off to Menlo college. If you've never heard of Menlo, it is a very small school (around 600 total students) in N. California. My aunt was professor at this school, and since it was small, she could make sure I was on a short leash. I got a 2nd degree in Broadcast Communications in 1.5 yrs, and went into the real world. after returning to the Seattle area in the early '90's I got an adult education MBA in Engr and Tech mgmt. I did this part time while working f\t. I have many friends from college that I keep in regular touch with, and as much fun as school was (perhaps too much fun), I'm done - even if that means flipping burgers for the rest of my life. Workplace After getting my 2nd undergrad degree, I stuck around the Bay area and went to work for the CBS-owned broadcast properties in SF. It was a very sexycool job with lots of cool perks but no $. I moved back to Seattle after the Loma Prieta quake. The problem with the radio biz is that the only way you make $ is a) get up at 3am (only morning air talent makes the big $) or b) sell airtime (sales is not my thing). I did work in radio in Seattle for about year, while trying to get a real job. I completely changed gears and went into technology (despite no acedemic background). Was lucky enough to get into the industry to ride the elevator up, and dumb enough to ride the elevator down. My jobs aren't nearly as cool as my broadcasting days, but they sure pay better! I've had many jobs in the industry (especially the dotcom days). I'm on my 7th or 8th stint at MS (this is a perfect career for someone with no attention span). Like the work, but I'm looking forward to retiring in a few years. - yeah, I keep saying that, but I keep finding new toys that I want
