Tonya Stewart:

CLASS OF 1991
Newark, NJ

Tonya's Story

I always wanted to be an entrepreneur when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a crazy idea. As it turns out, they were right, but I did it anyway. I am an entrepreneur. I like working for myself, it is rewarding at times and in other times it can drive you crazy. I love it! Chill Time: To relax I might watch a game on television, read, sew, or build something to take my mind off of things. Thank you to Mr. Haynes, my shop teacher from Bergen Street School , Ms. Dawson my sewing teacher, and my Step Dad, Coach? for teaching me a little about football. My Inspirations: My inspiration comes from the many teachers that I have had throughout the years. I especially remember Mrs. Barden, my music teacher at Bergen Street School who pushed me to sing in the choir. I have not stopped yet. She said to me Breland, I see something in you that you do not see and that's why I am so hard on you. Oh,how I wish I knew then what I know now, but that is hind sight and what's done is done. Mrs. Barden also taught me to never give up, continue until you achieve your goal. My high school years Ms. Harvey taught me to look for the silver lining in every cloud when I was negative about my future and life in general. I thought she was looney and told her so. I now tell others to be positive and to reach for the goals they have set for themselves, if any. If no goals are set I tell them to get started life is...Expand for more
moving forward and they should be too. Lifes Travels: I have lived in Newark, NJ for most of my life until I was 18 and engaged, when I decided to move to Georgia for a brief week(lol) and came back home to Newark, NJ. I then got married shortly thereafter to someone else and moved to Irvington, NJ. I am now raising my three children in Pennsylvania because the environment was different from what I grew up around and more conducive to learning. My obsessions: Some of my family members are officers and growing up I use to hear stories and I became obsessed with Perry Mason, Matlock, Murder She Wrote, and my new one is Monk. I also get a little carried away with football season and redecorating, HGTV baby. Surprises and Learning: My biggest surprise is that I have children! I have learned from my children that just because someone does something that you might not like it might be right for them. I have also learned that just because you come from the same parents does not mean that you do the right thing like the other siblings. I have learned from my children to love inspite of and no matter what. My children to me are the center of our home but they say that I am. Home Reno: If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the bathroom and add on a shoe closet. My dream home would be small enough to keep clean but large enough to hold all of my things that are necessary to function at home and business.
