Tonya's Story

Life It is amazing how one split second can change your life. The following story is not for the weak or faint hearted... August 25th 2005, I was driving my friend Steph home from Salsa dancing. We never made it. A woman who had been distracted by a shiny red ferrari, went through a red light, and came to a complete stop in my ribcage. I must have been unconscious for awhile because the next thing I knew I was arguing with the ambulance attendants that there was no way in hell that I would get out of my car. They managed it somehow because I woke up in the emergency room minus all of my brand new dance clothes. I was absolutely terrified that something wasn't quite right. Indeed, I had 8 broken ribs, a collapsed lung, multiple fractures in my pelvis and pubic bone, a fractured sacral wing, a broken right arm and several really bad bruises. They discovered that I have a high tolerance to pain meds because nothing worked. They eventually had to put me on this stuff that is 7 times as strong as morphine. You can imagine the hallucinations! I was still wide awake when they inserted the chest tube to clear out my chest cavity and was convinced that the doctor was way too young to be operating on me. I let him know it, poor man. I insisted that my brother stay with me during the entire procedure. I spent most of the time laughing and telling jokes which only made sense to me. Kit got a kick out of it but he always did have a morbid sense of humour. The police officer that was investigating the accident came to see me in emerg. I guess he was wondering if I was still alive. Steph told me that everyone in the hospital knew it because they could hear me howling. The good man also wanted to pass the message on that the lady had admitted fault. Steph got out the next day but I spent 15 days there. Personally I think that they released me way too soon because I could barely walk. They brought me home in an ambulance and carried me in. I had a wheelchair and a walker and live...Expand for more
d on the sofa for weeks. I went to all of my doctor's appointments in an ambulance which was the only way I could leave my house. I look back on the whole thing and wonder how I made it. It is amazing what we can go through and survive. I am certainly lucky to be alive but it is a still a constant struggle. It could be worse but at least I know that I will be walking unaided sometime soon. I forgot to mention the funniest part of the story. It was almost 2 months after the accident and I decided to leave the house for something other than a doctor's visit. Steph packed up the walker and the wheelchair and hauled me into her car. My boyfriend had told me before that he didn't think that it was a good idea to leave the house. I wasn't about to stay in the living room for the rest of my life, I said and told him I would call him when I got there. That wasn't good enough, so I called him from the car on my cellphone. I made a joke that I should call ahead to the hospital and see if my room was free. I was asking for it. I hung up the phone and was chatting with Steph while we were stopped at the red light. All of a sudden we heard this awful crunching sound and realised that this giant tour bus was attempting to turn right and dragging us along with him. Steph honked the horn but he kept going. It felt like we were going into a meat grinder (sorry) because the car was slowly getting smaller and smaller. He stopped. Someone called 911 but we were so stunned we couldn't leave the car. Fortunately we were not hurt but we are 2/2 on total vehicle loss... In case you were wondering we have actually been in a car together since. Several times actually. Our friends are starting to come around and are letting us in their vehicles. Someone even let both of us ride as passengers in their car!We were thinking of going on a vacation together but everyone thinks it is a bad idea to get on an airplane. Steph has bought a truck and my boyfriend bought a Volvo. I remain optimistic!
