Tracey's Story

Life Married Brad in 1990, 2 children (daughters, 1 in 1992, 1 in 1994). Live in Pulaski, WI, moved here in 2001, lived in UP of Michigan from 1993 to 2001. Coached varsity volleyball at a high shool there for 5 seasons, was hired for a 6th season, but we moved. (Shows up as a school I attended, but I'm under staff/teachers) Currently disabled, due to Guillain-Barre` Syndrome in Feb 2006, was paralized from chest down, had to learn how to walk again, was hopsitalized and rehab for 4 weeks. Have no feeling in over 90% of my body from illness and complications. I can walk, but can't feel my shoes or clothing. This has really slowed me down. I am thankful for every day, that I can get out of bed under my own power, since I can't move from the chest down when I wake, some days it is a real struggle, I have to do PT on my legs to get them to move and use my arms to lift myself out of bed. There is nothing else the doctors can do for me now. I thank God daily that I am still here to see my kids grow up. I know with what my doctors have found since my illness in Feb 2006, I may be in a wheelchair someday, I may not be able to take care of myself in the future either. I'm on some experimental medication/vitamin combo to try to regrow the nerves that were destroyed when I had Guillain-Barre` Syndrome. I watch my kids participate in sports and school activities and suport them in any way I can. I usher in church. I try to do as mush as I can each day. I try to cook supper each day, and try not to burn myself, since I don't feel it when I do. Some common task can be a real challenge for me, since I have to see what I am doing, I can't feel it, like typing, I can't feel the keys. When I walk I can't feel the ground or my steps, I have to see if the ground is unlevel, I have fallen, but I just have to get back up again, and hope I didn't get hurt, since I can't feel pain either. I have to do daily checks of my legs and body. I recently had 3 of my fingers sma...Expand for more
shed and they swelled up and I couldn't bend them, I went to the doctor and they did x-rays, I couldn't tell if it hurt, because I don't have feeling in my hands or arms. They weren't broke, but the knuckle was displaced on one finger, I felt no pain, I just couldn't bent my fingers. This may all sound scarey to you, but this is better than the Sunday morning in Feb (Feb 12, 2006) when I was fighting not to be put on a respirator, during my in and out of the hospital and the rehab unit and back to the hosptial back to the rehab unit, and then back into the hospital 2 weeks later, the bottom 1/3 of my lungs were paralized on 3 different occations. The first time they were going to put me on a respirator, but they had me do the tests a 3rd time and I almost passed out to pass the test, instead of the 2 times. So when my lungs were paralized the next 2 times they figured that they would come back around, they were right 1 out of the 2 times. I know have permanent lung damage and the bottoms of my lungs don't work the way they are suppose to, on x-rays & CT's it looks like sand/glass. I also found out some information on my birth mother, so that is a good thing to come out of this. I did find out that part of my illness that I now have, is inherited from her. She doesn't want to meet me, but gave me updated medical information. If you have any questions on how I'm doing just email me. Right now, I'm fighting with Social Security to get Disability. Now I'm coach a fastpitch 12Under tournament softball team, with my husband, great fun. Steff (youngest) starting pitcher. Season went alright, were in 4 tournaments. First one, not too good, Brad called away on a fire call during a game and we had only 1 practice. Second one did very well, 2-2 lost to the 2 and 3 place teams. Third tourney took 3rd place. Fourth one didn't do the best girls, it was a bracket tourney, and only 1 teams from each went on and we lost to the team that won the tournament.
