More about Trixy:"Born to a teenage mother and father in a small town of dead ends. Had close knit family and a grandmother that was determined that her grandchildren would be educated and not have to be subservient which is how she earned her living. Taught great ethics of hard work, being kind to others, carrying self in a respectable manner at all times and pride. Raised in a single parent home until the age of 10 when mom married. We lived in an environment of low income, but loving and hard working families. That was a time in my life when I could not see beyond a life of teenage pregnancies, welfare, high school dropouts etc. We were grateful to have Lions Park and the Salvation Army to give us exposure and positive adult supervision. Those were the good old days when Percy Christmas and Freddie Hicks and Eddie (AKA Wigman) stood in to be fathers to many of us girls who never had father figures. They did not abuse their authority or us and took great care of us in the absence of our hard at work parents. At the age of 12, I was given an opportunity to leave Raleigh and move to Connecticut. Unfortunately leaving my mother and brother behind. Family was making decisions for me back then and felt that I would have a better opportunity and a brighter future if I was in an environment that modeled higher education, marriage, and career. I moved in with my Maternal Aunt and Uncle and their five year old daughter. A tr...Expand for more
ue Cinderella story and from "rags to riches." I went from an average student to the top of my class A/B Honor roll from Freshman to Senior year. My Uncle was a perfect father figure and he taught me so much. It was him that saw things in me that I could not see for myself. I returned to Raleigh six months into my senior year and graduated from Enloe High School 1985. Upon graduation, i was accepted into North Carolina State University. "Party, party, party party" did I say PARTY!!! Not good. Two years into college I put one of those lessons learned as a child in to play "Always have a back up plan." I met an Army Recruiter and decided to go into the Army Reserves under the GI Bill. Another exceptional experience that taught me discipline and prepared me to return to college more focused and mature. I moved back to Connecticut in 1991 and was able to complete my Undergraduate degree in 1994 at Sacred Heart University. I was blessed to meet other strong black women and one was influential in coaching me to further my education. Thank you so much Dorothy Jefferies-Anderson, Ph.D. I was accepted in Graduate School and graduated 18 months later with a Master's Degree in Community and Agency Counseling 1997. Throughout my education and career I worked hard for my mother who was unable to fulfill her dreams of higher education and career because she made the choice of life for both of her children whom she had as a teenager. Life today is beautiful as I have a peice of the American Pie (Home Ownership), I know Jesus for myself, I have a loving family to include two of the best children in the world. When I think back over my life I am happy to say today that there is very little that I would change if I had to do it all over again. I lost my grandmother about 8 years ago, but she still lives within me. I have a career where I have an opportunity to reach out to teenagers in a way that I needed to be reached out to and was. It makes for a fulfilling life for me. January 1, 2011 HAPPY NEW YEAR".
