Troy's Story
Currently, I am studying Neuropsychology at The University of New Mexico, I have future plans to continue studying Neuroscience in Psychology further into Graduate School to obtain a PhD or Doctorate Degree. I find the human mind and behavior fascinating and to study at the synaptic level has definitely broadened my understanding on how all humans function. In the past few years after I decided to go back to college, I have had the opportunity to travel and explore the real world, very different from the small farm town that we grew up in. In my academic career, I feel that I have accomplished a lot, being an Engineering Major was very tough and exciting because I have had the opportunity to meet and work with professionals from NASA and mingle in a realm of professionals from major companies like Boeing Company to Google, all thanks to a National Organization that I have had the amazing opportunity to be a part of, the American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES). I have been the Student President for the college chapter at my previous junior college, Central New Mexico (CNM). I have held two internship positions, one I was working on a Bioengineering project to enhance and design a glucometer that won't break the skin or draw blood (very exciting) and my other internship was working on a NASA funded project called the Mars Yard Landscaping Project, where I was the mentor and lead on this project. h so many smart and outstanding native students, students from all the country, from many different tribes and backgrounds. I felt honored to represent Fort Peck everytime I introduced myself. Now I am at the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque, NM) where I am a Psychology Major studying Neuroscience, my science background helps me to go far in this field. In this field, I study the development of neuropathways of the brain through cognitive function. In laments terms, I study the links to certain thoughts to behaviors. Its a tough field, but I am loving every minute of it. I have been published in the Winds of Change Magazine for my development of a now annual STEM Knowledge Bowl at CNM, the magazine has given me an article and a respected mention. In the past year of 2016, I have been involved with other organizations and events, my most recent was a Book Fair that featured many famous Native American authors. These successful Natives give me hope to continue moving forward with education, if they can do it, so can I. But, eventually, I would love a career in Behavior Health or continue to do research in Neuropsych for a few more years. Life after high school has been anything but a roller coaster ride for me, but no matter what I had to endure, I have always believed in pushing forward, I never knew that dreams could come true until I actually tried. "You never know how strong you are until being strong is all you have."
