Troy's Story

Life After graduating from EHS, I went to school at the University of Washington where I earned an MBA, followed up by a PhD in astrophysics (really a B.A. in the social sciences). While at the University, I developed a computing algorithm that became a precursor for the systems that now drive the Internet (oh wait, Al Gore did that). Nevertheless, things have been well. Just this year, I placed second on American Idol – damn, that was another guy who lives in Seattle. I am very fortunate to live in the same city as Bill Gates, though – the richest man in the world – who has a beautiful mansion on the lakefront. In my split-level house in the suburbs, if you stand on your toes and look out the bathroom window and over the trees, you can see a sliver of that water in the distance. I'm married (15 years this year) and have a 13-year old son named Hunter – or is it married 13 years, with a 15-year old son? Hard to remember. We named him Hunter because of all the hunting I used to do growing up in Wyoming. Terrorizing squeakies with rocks counts, doesn't it? I currently work in public relations, doing marketing communications and media relations. One of the things I do is write articles that are published in magazines read by tens of thousands of people – Time, Newsweek, etc. ...Expand for more
(actually they run in trade journals like Professional Builder, USGlass Magazine, Building Products Digest, and Doors and Hardware – things you and I never read, and the articles always have someone else's name on them!) I love the work, though, and left a 15-year career in government to become a PR guy. It took me 18 years after high school to decide what I wanted to do when I grow up, but I'm glad I finally figured it out. The dream of becoming a rock star with the Who or Rolling Stones or organizing Woodstock revisited just didn't pan out. Life is good – I'm healthy, live in a city I love, have a family who cares about me, a dog who obeys much of the time, plus there's always good music on the iPod and interesting books to read. Janell, Hunter and I like to camp and take road trips and we have a lot of laughs together. In the next 10 years, my goal is to have a mid-life crisis. Janell probably won't let me have a young hottie, so maybe I'll get a Harley. More likely, I'll just sell off my current P.O.S. car and buy myself a jiggy Geo. As those androgynous New Wave Eurythmics sang when we were in high school, "Sweet dreams are made of this." Or, if you prefer, as Diamond David Lee Roth and the Van Halen brothers rocked out to in 1984, "I might as well jump!" Be well.
