Tura's Story
Hi Friends,
I hope you are all well and that life has been kind to you. When in Austin, Texas, let me know!
After Westport High, I went to Swarthmore College and graduated in 1975 with a major in Latin. Such was the influence of WHS Latin teacher Helen Biery and a dynamic classics faculty at Swarthmore. I spent the spring of 1974 at the Center for Classical Studies in Rome and had a fantastic time. The light is better, the food fantastic and the people wonderful, but then, I might be biased.
Fired up to learn another language with modern relevance, I went to the University of Texas to study Arabic. Did I do these things for the travel? I was studying in Cairo at the time of the Camp David Accords when Egyptians would stop Americans in the street and exclaim, "America good! Carter good!"

dministration from the LBJ School at UT Austin, I went to DC in 1981 to find work in foreign policy or cultural exchange. My job hunt was unsuccessful and I returned to Austin where I worked various jobs and became active in the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). Working for peace in the Middle East has been a life long pursuit.
I met the love of my life, Gene Cook, in 1983. We married and started a family. Our four children are now in high school, college, and out in the world. Where did the time go?? Gene is a software engineer and I currently manage the paintings of my late father, Vincent Campanella. We had a terrific retrospective show at the Albrecht Kemper Museum in St. Joe in 2007 and saw many old friends at that time.
Drop me a line and let me know what you are doing.
Peace,
Tura
