Ubaldo's Story

Our younger days in the Barrio were so full of events that we hardly had enough time to stop and breath. If Tito, Cano, or Tanis were not calling us for a game of Barrio tackle football, The Curieles were throwing a party at El Rancho, or at Cano's house, or fishing at the canal with Pepe, or out with the little barrios kids teaching them to play football or basketball. It was not a slow or eneventful childhood. it seemed we had very little idle time. I remember watching Barrio stars like Tito Castañeda run with the football and inwardly wish that I had that skill. He could put moves on you that boggled the mind and faked people out of their shoes. Seeing Cano direct a drive the length of the football field and hearing him think in the huddle every play was a lesson in and of itself, but then to watch him perform topped it all. Seeing Shooter throw one of those infamous cross body blocks was a thing of wonder. HOw could he make people flip up into the air as effectively as he could, man, I still am amazed. Or seeing Duane run precise patterns, jump up and bring down an otherwise uncatchable ball. Then there was Booner, playing middle linebacker and devastating running backs and receivers that tried catching or running the ball through or in his area. Also, I recall Tanis, when it came to passing downs, not a single soul coul...Expand for more
d block that guy! Do what you want try what you may, he was just never blocked. I remember a guy called Brown, he was tough to bring down, and he was even tougher to catch. Neto was also a jet on two feet. Once that guy got going, all you could see was dust flying and a blur where his legs should have been. He was "JET FAST!" Then there was Mario, man could that kid play safety. He was so heady a player that he could anticipate the flight of the ball run to it and deliver some devastating blows that rocked people to the core, and he did it with a smile that ran from ear to ear. They all loved the game and played it like they loved it. WITH ALL THEIR HEART! All of us would get together before the Dallas game if it was played late or after the Dallas game if it was played early. We would put on some marathon games that would last until sundown or until another Barrio came to challenge our dominance. Then, the Marathon game became a war. Those were some awesome times and some truly awesome heros. At times and moments of reflection I recall certain memories and they take me to that time as if on a time machine. I can smell the era, sense the excitement, relive the moment and smile that I could experience what I have lived through. Oh it was great back then, but those times were the foundation for the magnificent era I live in now.
