Ursula's Story
After graduation from AHS in 1966, I worked in a travel agency in Albany until I met my first husband. I enjoyed my short career in the travel business and have been able to do some traveling. I lived near Millbrook, NY for 23 years with my first husband In my late 30's I suffered a health crisis that left me unable to have children. Later my husband suffered a mid-life crisis and decided not to be married to me anymore and sent me divorce papers.
Since I no longer had a reason to be in NY, I decided to live in Sarasota, Florida were my parents had moved to retire, and where my brother Andre already had moved from NY and began raising his family. I then enjoyed a career in real estate in that area and enjoyed the beautiful weather at the beaches nearby and was able to spend time with all my relatives in Florida. There I met my second husband several years later. First marriage didn't work out too good, but as you can see, 2nd marriage is working out fine. We lived in Florida until he had a job transfer to Hickory, NC where we reside now. We enjoyed the beaches of Florida, but also am glad to be back to the mountains and change of seasons. We do go to visit family in Florida each year in the winter to visit part of the family there.
Everything was going well, but as we grow older, things change in our lives. My dear sister died of a heart attack in July 1997. She had a daughter who now has her own family and lives in Amsterdam. My other 2 brothers remain in NY and we try to visit that part of the family each year during the summer. Then my dear Dad passed away in 2007 of health complications and Mama had to leave Florida and come to live with us in North Carolina. We were fortunate to see the whole family again in March of 2010 when he walked his oldest daughter Alicia down the aisle at a beach wedding in Anna Maria island, Florida. Little did we know then that we would lose him also later th...Expand for more
at year. Then August 2010, my brother Andre passed away of heart failure and complications.
The last funeral that the whole family was able to attend was Mama's in July 2011. She died at home with us due to heart attack because she had a weakened heart but she lived to reach 85 years of life. It has been difficult this past year to deal with all my losses, but I still have memories of all my loved ones around me to remind me of how much they meant to me.
I have lost both my parents now and 2 of my siblings, but my 2 brothers in NY and NJ (both of who are younger than me) and I still keep in touch especially as we are getting older now. My niece whose wedding we all attended has now also had a beautiful daughter. Although I was never able to have my own children I have been blessed to be able to also see my nephews and nieces have their own children and so I am now not only a great aunt, but also my mom was even able to see her great grand children before leaving us. Fortunately, my husband and I have been able to keep our health and hope to continue enjoying life together and to see our great, great grandchildren!
Currently 2016, my last niece, youngest of my brother Andre, got engaged and we hope to attend her wedding mid October in Florida. AHS class of '66 will also have their 50th class reunion the same weekend so we will not be able to attend that but are looking forward to seeing any photos anyone wants to share.
