Val's Story
It's hard to believe so much time has passed since those relatively carefree days of HS. I know I'm getting old but I just don't feel it. In fact, I feel as though I'm only 24 and still not completely grown up.
I know otherwise every time I look in the mirror. Amazingly, I still suffer from acne breakouts. And at my age! I've tried just about everything over time but nothing has really helped. Maybe I'll try a holistic diet soon. But then I'd probably have to curb my urge for bacon cheeseburgers and bourbon and water, so it's probably a non-starter. Oh well . . .
After HS, I kicked around for a little over a year until I appeared on the radar screen of the Selective Service. Since I didn't want to get shot at I spent four years in Uncle Sam's canoe club. Afterward I attended Old Dominion University, received a BS and went to work for the federal government for the next 30 years. When I decided I'd had enough I "fired my employer" and became a man of leisure. I've never regretted it, nor ever will.
I do, however, regret never having ...Expand for more
married. I never met the right woman, that's all. It seemed as though every time I met one who intrigued me to the point of lighting my cigarettes from the wrong end, I had to assume at least two things: (1) she already had a boyfriend or husband and (2) he was big and mean. (The sight of blood upsets me, especially my own.) It turned out I was right at least 90 percent of the time.
I have to add that I also feared ending up like my poor dad - having a wife who hated the sight of him and two ungrateful kids. No wonder he went to his greater reward far too soon. Perhaps I'm just being cynical; other men have been happily married for a long time. I just wasn't confident I could be. I have no one to blame but myself for that.
All things considered, I've had a really good run thus far and I hope it's not over any time soon. I've certainly had my ups and downs, just like everyone else. I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers me. I think it would be a real hoot! I wish everyone only the best. As Mr. Spock said, "live long and prosper."
