Valerie's Story
Life
Life is pretty good -- i've got two great kids, Kim - 20 and Andrew, is 17. They are both South Korean and the joys of my life. Ended my unhappy 22 year marriage in 2004, and relocated to the shore area. Have two dogs, both Shih Tzus, 6 year old Pepper and a puppy, Saltina. We also have Two turtles. Finally really enjoying life -- going into the city a lot to Broadway and traveling. Been to Alaska and Bermuda, the Caribbean, Riviera Maya in Mexico, Dude Ranches and having lots of friends and family over -- couldn't do that with an alcoholic husband and dad, so we are making up for lost time!
When we moved, I had to resign from the Board of Education, where I was Vice President for four years and from teaching CCD at my church. Once we get really settled in our new surroundings, maybe we'll all get involved again, but right now we are going day by day -- making our new house just the way we want it. I'm having the best time landscaping -- since it was new, there was nothing but sand and it is quickly becoming our little oasis!
I met a terrific man, fell in love and feeling like a teenager again and was having the best time ever. We have had some ups and down, we have been trying to work it out again and he makes me really happy. Working hard in a new position at the same company for the past eleven plus years. Working with senior citizens is so rewarding... these are truly amazing people.
Kim is beautiful, driving (yikes) and a great student, brilliant and planning on being an oncologist (I need to win the lottery!). She was accepted to four universities and finally chose Arcadia in Glenside PA. They gave her some help in a scholarship... now if I could only come up with another 22 thousand a year, I'll have it made. She was invited to spend her first semester abroad and attended the Unversity of Limerick in Ireland. Now she is back to the real world in Philly and finds it very dull! No more weekend excursions to Spain, Italy, Scotland, London... poo...Expand for more
r baby. What an adventure for her. Andrew is the social one, a real heart breaker -- tall, dark and handsome. The braces are off and ... watchout! The girls are after him like crazy! He, too, is now driving which I am not sure is a blessing or a curse!
Never thought it could be true, but being "50-plus" is a great age!!
School
Back in High School, I was madly in love with Wayne Miller -- I even married him. He truly was the love of my life... but the marriage only lasted two years. If he hadn't ended it, we'd still be together -- probably would have been grandparents by now! Ha! But, then again, I wouldn't have had the two great kids I have right now, so things work out for the best. My favorite teacher, ever, was Mr. Carkhuff. From Herbert Hoover Junior High. The best guy around -- he was a true inspiration to me. My best friend was Diana Shipman. I sure do miss her and think of her often. I don't miss Edison, tho. When I go back, I barely recognize it. It is like a big city now! When I lived on Old Post Road, it was so rural. Not any more! Still go up that way a lot to see my closest, dearest friend, Terry, who lives in Metuchen.
College
Spent some time at Middlesex, but Wayne lured me away from there and then graduated from the Bryman School. Worked for the Edison Medical Group for a while. Wonder often if they are still there.
Workplace
After the Bryman School, I went to work for Johnson & Johnson for about 13 years. But when I married my second husband, we moved to the shore and the commute was a killer. So, I "retired" and concentrated on starting my family. It turned out not to be as easy as we hoped, so I worked different part-time jobs, until the kids finally arrived from South Korea. Now I've been working at a great place for the past 12 years in Lakewood. Couldn't ask for a better job.
Military
Never did this one! Although my marriage was somewhat like boot camp!! Never got my purple heart for that one... don't even get child support!
