Valerie's Story
Life
It has been a busy few years since high school. I have been married for 24 years and have four children; Two girls- 21 and 19, and two boys- 15 and 10. My eldest daughter is moving away this fall, school is just to far to commute now and gas prices are brutal. In this real estate 'correction' I think her rent will be cheaper than gas.
After school, I moved to Toronto and four years ago we moved to California. It was quite the change but it has been a wonderful adventure. I probably experienced the most significant jolt the first time my little one stood at his school during friday flag salute and I heard him say "I salute the flag of the United States....." It was then that I realized I had made changes that would impact the lives of my children.
I have become a soccer addict and it was soccer that made the transition easier for me when relocating and leaving all family and friends behind. My boys still play and I now play on too many teams to keep track of ( how did I manage to join two teams on a monday night that are both an hour opposite directions from my home???? Ooops.) I play keeper so I hurt all the time but I am not quite ready to stop.
Just had a thought....I worry about my daughter's gas cost commuting to school but I drive almost everynight to soccer games further than her school :-) Hmmmm, logic???? NO.
It has been a long ...Expand for more
time VKH. I see Arlene Mooney at least once a year. We have kept in touch all this time and have a wonderful wild evening once a year when she visits. My soccer team went to Edmonton for the World Masters two years ago and Arlene came out to every game ( starbucks in hand) as our good luck charm...We won!!! So she has a special place to my San Diego team.
To all others, hope you are well and still having fun.

School
No question here on the teacher inspiration. Jack Potter was my inspiration. Jack was intense and passionate in the class room and gave us the right to take responsibility for NOT coming to class but we would have to take the consequences. He was the first adult in control that we could actually 'negotiate' with.
And his passion for Shakespeare...as a result I majored in English at university ( with a minor in linguistics). Of course, when I told Jack how many plays I had studied in one year he completely scoffed at me for rushing the Shakespeare experience and told me that I couldn't possibly have done any justice to any of them if I had read that many ( 3 or 4 I think in one year). Thank goodness I had a minor in linguistics to fall back on!
I still re-read the plays....annoy my children to no end when I try to help them but my friends' children call me for essay support. Classroom lessons taken through out life.....
