Valerie's Story
Life
Valerie Dixon is the founder of the ÂPrevent Crime Before it Happens Billboard Campaign and the co- chair of Divine Intervention Ministries. Her life changed on June 25, 2001 when her only child, Robert James Houston Dixon, was gunned down just blocks from their home. The event shocked and appalled her to such a degree that she vowed to dedicate her life to making communities safe and helping crime victims get the care they need. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, she has worked in Allegheny CountyÂs Energy Crisis Program and Giant Eagles Supermarket, Ms. Dixon attended O.I.C. (Ocuppational Industrialization Center) and the Pipes Trade Training Center where she became a licensed journeyman plumber. Valerie also was a supervisor for UPMCÂs Best Health Care Program now known as UPMC for Life. Today she is a Juvenile Court Advocate for the Center for Victims of Violence and Crime, where she accompanies families through their court proceedings. es on the Pittsburgh Homicide Task Force and was recently elected to the Executive Board of the NAACPÂs local Pittsburgh Branch, where she currently co-chairs an Anti-Violence Initiative called Strategy Â95Â 2004. ValerieÂs commitment to stopping violence has lauched her to becoming an active member on the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and DelinquencyÂs D.M.C. committee. This group is working with several counties throughout the state of Pennsylvania in regenerating a relationship between law enforcement, youth and communities. Valerie is very active within The East Liberty Presbyterian Church near her home, where she taught a 4th grade Sunday school class for ten years, and currently serves on the Gun Violence Prevention Committee which has recently partnered with Cease Fire PA. Valerie is currently working with the U.S. Attorney General Mary Beth Buchanan on The Project Safe Neighborhood Campaign where she will collaborate her billboard efforts with their Gun Crime Hits Home Campaign throughout the state of Pennsylvania and the Eastern Region of the U.S. She was ordained as a deacon on April 27, 2003.
