Valerie's Story
After I graduated in '70 I attended the U of W for three years trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. I went into restaurant management for a while and had to do some business travel. I decided I needed to get there faster, so I'd get a pilot's license. Wow! What a discovery! After about three hours in a Piper Cub, I wanted to fly for a living.
I told my flight instructor that this was the career for me, to which he replied, "You would be lucky if they let you sweep out the hangar." (girls just didn't fly then) I thought to myself, You just watch my smoke, Butt-head, because it's gonna be from four engines!"
I completed my B.S. in Aerospace Science at Metropolitan State College in Denver, got my Airline Transport Rating and worked my way up from commuter aircraft to heavy jets. I've flown all over the world f...Expand for more
rom contract flying, travel club, military airlift and scheduled airline routes. I hold the honor of being the only woman (that I know of) to have ever been qualified on the Douglas DC-8, an aircraft whose flight controls totally powered, feel like a Boeing 737 with no hydraulic assist. I am the queen of the dinosaur aircraft, having flown DC-3, DC-8, MD-80 and Boeing 707 and 737s.
After about ten years of marriage to my wonderful husband, Charles, and allegations that I was never home, I retired from flying and am in Risk Management at a trucking company.
I am an avid antique silver and art collector, gardener, gourmet cook and killer party thrower. I am active in several committees at my synagogue and with America's Walk for Diabetes. I do not have children of my own, but have three step children (grown) and five grandchildren.
