Valerie's Story
Life
Valerie is a partner in Seltzer Fontaine Beckwith, a legal search firm based in Los Angeles, placing attorneys with law firms and corporate law departments. She consults with regard to career and practice development, law office management and expansion, and the elimination of bias in the legal profession. Valerie entered the legal search profession in 1981, after two years in the litigation department of a major Los Angeles law firm.
Valerie earned her JD from Hastings College of the law in 1979 and her undergraduate degree from UCLA., magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, in 1976. Valerie has served on the Board of Governors and the Advisory Council of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles (WLALA). Valerie has published numerous articles in the legal press. She writes a monthly column, ÂRecruiting RoundtableÂ, which appears in the Los Angeles Daily Journal and San Francisco Daily Journal.
Valerie is past president of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Hastings Alumni Association and was honored as their 1998 Alumnus of the Year. She was the first (and, thus far, only) woman president of the Hastings 1066 Foundation, the 32-year-old fund-raising organization for Hastings College of the Law. In 1999, Hastings Clara Foltz Feminist Association honored Valerie with their Role Model Award.
Valerie's daughters, Genevieve and Jillian, attend the School for Advanced Studies at University High School in Los Angeles, and Genevieve will begin Smith College in the fall of 2001.
