Valery's Story

Life I married the guy whose picture I saw in my friend's yearbook (she went to a different school than I did). I saw his picture when I was 14 years old, and actually met him when I was 18. Next year, 2008, we will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary! My husband and I were in a Christian band for a while, and I miss it. I still write songs and play guitar. We want to fix up the garage so we can practice in there. I'd still love to do outreaches and things like that. I love costumes and going to the Renaissance Pleasure Faire. I'd like to do more costume sewing, maybe for friends and family, as a hobby. We have two children, ages 22 and 18. It's harder when they're older!!! We live in the High Desert now, and I love it. School My biggest crush in school? There were quite a few, and I can remember them as far back as 1st grade! In 1st grade it was Curtis Fritz, 2nd grade was Roger Cravey, 3rd grade was Mark but at the moment I can't think of his last name. I don't remember having a crush in 4th grade, I was too busy getting into trouble with Karen, lol. 5th grade was Mark Apsley. 6th grade was Mike Milton. 7th grade was Mike Milton and Tom Tankersley. By 8th grade I had a boyfriend who was in high school, so I didn't have any crushes then, except on him. High school - 9th grade was when I saw the picture of my future husband (although I didn't know it at the time), and after that he was always someone I had a crush on. Also in high school - I had a crush on a guy whose last name was "Fox" but I don't remember his first name. At Whittier High School I had a crush on a guy named Joel Derr, and also Darryl whose last name I can't recall, and Chris Fuller. Wow, I never realized I was so boy crazy back then until I wrote it all out! My favorite teachers were: 1st Grade - Miss Suzanne at Hadley 4th Grade - Miss Stern who became Mrs. Klingenmeir (sp?) 7th Grade - Mrs. Anderson 8th Grade - Mr. Rodriguez High School - I had an English teacher whose name I wish I could remember because she really did inspire me more than just about any other teacher, mostly because I felt she believed in me and she truly cared. I should go find my annual and put her name on here because she was an awesome lady! I was also really inspired by Mr. Zimmer, my biology teacher at Whittier High School. I hated biology, and refused to do the disections my Junior year. He failed me. I had to take the second semester over again my senior year. I went in with a better attitude, and I got an A from him, which was not an easy thing to do! I'm glad he stuck to his guns and refused to let me slide. Another teacher I remember fondly, although I'm not sure why, is Mr. Moothart (sp?) who was my 9th grade Algebra teacher for the short time I was at Whittier Christian High. I didn't like math very much, but he made it seem easier to deal with for some reason, and I've never forgotten him. One of my funniest memories was from Bethany Baptist during junior high school. Patty Manson sat with me and Cherie Blake and Melanie Marcotte at lunch one day. Patty was a cheerleader; we were not. Mike Milton wal...Expand for more
ked by and commented about Patty sitting with the peasants. Well, with my interest in the Renaissance Faire (even then), my friends and I secretly gave titles to all the popular kids (King Kenny, Queen Marianne, etc.) We would bow to them call them "majesty" and "my lord" or "my lady" until Mr. Kuppers made us knock it off. Another of my favorite funny memories from Bethany was when Cherie and Melanie and I used to watch Grimsley on Saturday nights, then on Monday morning we'd talk about it in class and bust up laughing. We got sent out of the room more than once over it! Last funniest memory was also at Bethany, in the 4th grade. Karen and I brought her Ouija board to school. We'd been playing with it at her house the night before and putting her cat on it, so we thought it was just funny. They don't think Ouija boards are very funny at Christian schools. ;) We ended up in the principal's office. We were laughing and I remember Mr. Rodriguez, even before he was the principal, saying "this isn't a picnic, girls". Since then I've come to understand the seriousness of using occult tools like that, but at the time we had no idea, so I've always thought it was a pretty funny story. Workplace My first job was at the McDonalds on Painter. Hated it. After high school I went to work as a file clerk for Bedline. They had a layoff a few months after I started, so I took the summer off to have fun (and met my husband!) Went back to work for Bedline as a customer service rep. Did that for a couple of years. Took time off and my daughter was born, then went back to work when she was about a year old as a library clerk for the Wardman Library at Whittier College. Took time off from that when my son was born. Went to work briefly for Wickes furniture to try to bring in some extra income. It was hard being away from my kids, so I did some telemarketing from home for a leukemia charity. That didn't last too long because I couldn't believe how rude people can be. Once my kids were in school I went to work at Acorn Engineering in Industry as a Personnel/Human Resources clerk/assistant. I did that for about 6 years and loved it, but there were a lot of personal issues in my life that caused me to have to resign. The next job I had was as a receptionist/clerk for a CPA firm. It was a good job and I liked it for the most part, except I hated having to account for every single minute of my day. Plus, I wanted to work part time as my husband's career was doing well, but they needed someone who could work full time so that eventually ended. For a little while I worked as a clerk at Blockbuster Video. That was a fun job, but I didn't really make enough money at it. Finally, I went to work for Barcana, where they manufacture artificial Christmas trees. I was an AP/Payroll/HR clerk. It was part time, and I liked it, but again, an opportunity to stay home with my kids was presented and I took it. I've been a stay-at-home mom/homemaker ever since. Lately, now that the kids are grown, I'm thinking about working again. I'd love to work at Disneyland if it wasn't so far away from where I live now.
