Valrie's Story

Life I can't believe I will be 43 years old on next week,2/16.. it's been 25 years since I graduated from Brandon High. I am married with 2 beautiful daughters, ages 10 and 7 and the oldest is in the gifted program. I am a senior parole agent in illinois, the windy city to be exact. civic organizations include Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, eastern star, executive board member of my local union and vice-president of the adult choir at my church and I also sing in the youth choir. still busy like back in the day. School Ms.Johnson who taught communications and Ms.Robinson who was my advanced English teachers were the greatest inspirations for me. Ms. Johnson was dealing with psychotheraputifc stuff like Dr. Wayne Dyer and the child within-it was deep. I bet if we had more teachers and classes like that ,we wouldn't have so many Columbine incidents. Ms. Robinson was hilarious, risque, and made literature ROCK!!!! I didn't feel like I was the only black student in the class because the focus was on the stories, critiquing, analyzing and ofcourse her crasy antics.. I loved sitting in math class with Rabbit-white guy who ran track. He introduced me to Jimmy Buffet, I like mine with lettuce and tomataoe -hinze 57 french fries and potatoes. I thought of ole ra...Expand for more
bbit last year when I heard that jimmy buffet had died and i remembered math class-i'm sure we drove the teacher nuts! I loved the marching band, the practices, the games, the bus rides and the competition. I loved Lonnie Keene(band director) I loved the comraderie we black students had in the band,Jackie Kennedy(my oldest friend now famous principle of Blake high school),My uncle Reggie Burney(now deceased-died 2years ago),Gail Weston,Alva RIvers etc. simply fond memories.. I loved singing in the choir and the toughness and discipline that Mr. Earl Pate taught us_(Coroliss Wheeler, sharon Pyron, stephan Napier and Alphonso) I enjoyed being a cupidette -it was a precursor for becoming a sorority woman and learning servitude.i enjoyed solving the political issues of the day in leadership class with Ms. Hill at the realm.I am still a drama queen-not really-but I did enjoy being in the play the Hobbit. I am still a thespian at heart!I felt honored being elected senior class vice-president and elected into the senior hall of fame. It is my prayer and desire that my daughters years at high school be as rewarding, joyful and teach the life lessons I learned,ie teamwork, committment, patience, multitasking, fun, friendship and joy. Thanks for the memories Brandon!
