Vanessa's Story
Life
New Entry (2008-2013):
Family: I have two sons, Tristan Hawthorne (3) and Kavan Alexandre (1). My spouse is the Roman historian at UMBC. My parents are both working: dad's still in the space industry and mom does cancer research now. My brother's at the same job, now working on a master's in immunology.
Jobs: Finally got my history degree, but I can't stop learning, so I'm teaching myself ancient Greek. Broke into the publishing industry. Joined the Strange Horizons webzine staff and began a company: editness.com. My contracts are mostly with education companies, speculative fiction writers, and people who need time management help.
Hobbies: Launching a roundtable podcast book review group, Bookfrogger, this month. Still do D&D pretty much every Saturday with the dudes.
Shockers (to me, anyway): I'm moderate now, and tend to vote third party. I've also realized I have lived in Maryland as long as I lived in Fort Wayne.
2012 Deaths: My Aunt Lois died of complications from breast cancer several months ago. She fought with stage four for three years. She is the bravest, toughest, most creative person I know, and I miss her very much. Also, my little dog, Lily, died last summer (picture of ...Expand for more
her in the album). She had degenerative disc disease. That dog got me out of the house when nothing else would. I guess what I'm trying to say by including this is that 2012 was when I really began to realize that everything will die. It's a stepping stone, hard to internalize, like discovering your parents aren't always right.

Old Entry (1997-2007):
Marriage: Married a guy I met at my brother's university during a D&D game. He's a Long Islander, and is currently working on a Ph.D. in Classics.
Residence: I've lived in three points of a triangle in Maryland: Frederick for a year (living near mountains was unusual for a flatlander), just outside of DC for three years (was there on 9/11), now in Baltimore.
Jobs: Got panic disorder with agoraphobia six months after moving to Maryland, so that killed my high school infatuation with being a politician. I've since moved to a more literary angle.
College: Dropped out of college due to agoraphobia, but have recently returned (2007). Should be getting my degree in history, Spring 09.
Family: My brother is a microbiologist now, mom's the director at a fertility lab in B-more, and dad helped design the probe for the Dawn Mission (see NASA website).
