Velda's Story
Life
I am now 50 years old and I have two daughters ages 26 & 27 and three grand sons ages 7, 5, & 2. My 27 year old daughter and her sons live in Florida now. My 26 year old daughter is expecting her first child, a girl in December 2007. I am so excited about this grandchild, I will be able to spend more time with this one and spoil her since she will be closer than the three grandsons are. I only see my grandsons once a year and that is at Christmas. These two children are from my first marriage.
I am married the third marriage is to my high school sweet heart Kim Wall. We both were attending Parkland High. We have been married for ten years now. We were just told on Aril 5th 2007 that Kim has pancreatic cancer, and we are going through a very bad time right now. He is undergoing chemotherapy every week, we hope will extend his life more than what the initial prognosis was (3 to 6 months).
I work for the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools operating a school bus because of a back injury that got worse with being the main caregiver to Kim.
I spend some time sewing for other people, & myself, plus family members. Until my husband got sick I was trying to attend college online earning credits to attain my associates' degree in business administration. I am hoping to finish college and open a sewing and alterations shop in my home. It is kind of hard attending college, work full time and take care of a home and attend to my husbands needs.
Kim and I live close to Hanging Rock State Park. We live on 45 acres of land and have over 3 thousand acres of woods, pasture land and tobacco fields around us. Our nearest neighbor lives about a mile in any direction away from us. Yes a city girl living in the country and loving it. I can grow my own vegetables and preserve them for winter.
I love to sew clothing and grow my own vegetables to can or freeze them. When we can get the garden space plowed for planting. Yes it is a lot of work but I enjoy the fruits of my labor, which are the vegetables that come from the plants. With this I do enjoy cooking, bu...Expand for more
t sewing is my first love. I enjoy working with my hands more than any thing.
Since the doctor diagnosed my husband's cancer, I have spent a lot of time at his side. I have been trying to keep his spirits up, and not letting him give up and letting the cancer win. This in fact is very hard to do, but I do my best to keep his spirits high and not let him get depressed. This situation is why I am glad that I am not able to have any more children which is ok with grandchildren I don't need another baby around.
I am still 5"4' tall, and still rather small built, I have been very fortunate and not gained much weight. I weight about 111 pounds. I also color my hair blond to blend in the gray hairs that I have gotten over the years as we all do.
Most of the sewing that I do is for the North-South Skirmish Association which Kim and I are members of. We go to Winchester Virginia twice a year to wear the uniforms of the 27th North Carolina troop the Guilford Grays. We also shoot the actual weaponry of the civil war era for points. We defiantly are not re-enactors. We don't shoot at each other; we shoot at targets, not people. This is fun. Kim and I were wed ten years ago this past May at the Nationals. This was very interesting trying to get a Wedding cake to Winchester; I went for cake squares from Dewey's Bakery in Winston. Yum, Yum.
I have two pet rabbits. We also have about twenty cats that ranging from week old kittens to older cats. We have a Blue eyed husky which I named Deamon, and a Saint Bernard, Great Dane mixed dog tall and pretty he has the Bernard head with the Dane body and coat. He is very unique, and his name is Sam. I also have a Dalmatian which is one of a few breeds of dogs that I have really wanted to own. Her name is Freckles. We have eight other dogs.
Today is March 22, 2009 I am updating this now sorry I forgot to do this last year. I am saddened to write that on September 26, 2007 my beloved Kim passed away because of the cancer.
I have also had to retire from work because of an injury to my back while i was taking care of Kim.
