Eddie's Story

I entered CCHS in September 1975 after graduating from Castle Hill Junior High School 127 (class 9-1). I lived on Morris Park Avenue between Mathews and Muliner Avenues. After graduating from CCHS in June of 1978 I enrolled in John Jay College for three years working towards a degree in Public and Government Administration until May 1981 when I decided to transfer to Herbert H. Lehman College. This was a difficult time as I was wavering in forging an occupational identity then decided to temporarily discontinue my education. I then worked in several blue-collar jobs for about six years until I met my best friend and queen and her little girl. We fell in love and married shortly afterwards. We were rejuvenated, found sunshine in our skies and looked to the future. After having our second child in 1988 I returned to classes. I re-enrolled in Lehman College and after my first year of accounting studies I worked as an accounting clerk. After my second year of studies (intermediate accounting) I was hired as a junior accountant for American International Group, Inc where I worked for four years and during which time I earned my bachelors degree in accounting in 1991. (My wife earned her associate degree in nursing in 1992 while attending class on a part time basis and subsequently earned her BS in nursing). In May of 1994 we had our third child and I resigned from my position to be our newborn primary care giver, AKA Mr. Mom (don't laugh guys it was an enriching experience, opened my eyes to one of the most difficult jobs in the world [childrearing and parenting], and ma...Expand for more
de me appreciate the role my wife had performed in rearing our two older kids). Three years later I returned to the work force as I accepted my first healthcare finance position - junior accountant for Our Lady of Mercy Healthcare System in the Bronx. I then moved on as a reimbursement accountant for St. Joseph Medical Center in Yonkers, and a financial analyst for Health Quest Systems, Inc in Poughkeepsie, Duchess County, NY. During my tenure at Health Quest my wife was diagnosed with stage 3A advanced localized breast cancer. I was on FMLA from my job for six months to care for her as she was hospitalized three times during 2007 that included life support. In February 2008, I moved on and was hired as the Senior Financial Analyst for the Catholic Health Care System, Inc in the city but unfortunately I became a casualty of the recession and lost my job in November 2008. Two months afterwards, in January 2009 the sun set from my sky as I lost my best friend and my queen. I ventured into marriage almost twenty-two years earlier for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, forsaken all others till death do us part. I was faithful to my vows and at the end death did us part. And now I remain unemployed, once again considering returning to classes perhaps to study for an MBA in Finance or Social Service Administration. I think about re-learning how to play the clarinet and perhaps taking up tennis lessons. But one thing is for certain I find myself once again looking into the future, albeit from a different standpoint.
