Vernon's Story
After high school I joined the U S Navy and served 4 years; 2-1/2 years on board the USS Yortown CVS-10, 7 months on the USS Noa DD-841 and the remainder of my enlistment attached to the Fleet Sonar School in Key West, FL.
After my military service I returned to Baton Rouge, studied Foresty Management and obtained a BS in Forestry in 1977.
After graduation I accepted a position with James M. Vardaman & Co., a forestry consulting firm, where I worked for a year until I hung my own shingle out and went in business myself for 3 years, until interest rates in 1981 got so high that new house construct virtually stopped, which trickled down to my businees of representing private owners in sales of their timber. e time, timber prices drop approximately 70% and I had to recommend to clients that they sit on their timber unless they just had to sell some timber.
After closing my office, I got into the oil business as an Indepent Contract Landman and made my living researching mineral titles in LA, TX, AR, MS and AL for the next 24 years.
In 2005 accepted an inhouse employee position with Dominion Resources, Inc., to head their Land Department and project in Tuscaloosa, AL. Since accepting said position, the project has passed through the hands of several companies, who have each hired me to continue the Project until I recently retired in 2015.
Now I have the time to indulge in my hobbies of woodworking, fly fishing, traveling, photography and cooking.
