Veronica (Rocki)'s Story

My kids tell me I don't stroll down Memory Lane. Its more like an all-day hike (picture two, now adult, boys rolling their eyes). I enjoy sharing with them so they will know (and hopefully understand) what life was like in the "dark ages", before the Internet, color TV, video games and ice-makers in the freezer doors and other luxuries they take for granted. Since we've all been there together already, I won't dwell on ancient history with you. Well, maybe just a little. I had a good childhood, friends and always had something to do, much of it outdoors. I attended a Catholic grade school and public high school where I did very well and graduated with honors. During high school I worked at a Volkswagen dealership as a receptionist. I also made many a sundae and ice cream cake at a local Carvel Ice Cream Shop. After high school I worked full time as a bookkeeper. 4 years later I decided to attend the local community college full time and worked as an auto vinyl roof installer, retail cashier, bookkeeper, sold shoes, and was a delivery vehicle driver between classes. I finally graduated with an AS in Business Administration. I found Mr. Right around the corner at my neighbor's house. He is her brother. We were married in 1983. We planned to work and raise a family in NJ, staying close to home and our families. How naive of me to think that life was going to be so structured and go as I had planned! I'm glad I was so wrong! The Navy became our lifestyle when John rejoined as a nurse. My husband John and I managed to successfully raise 2 sons, Ryan and Jeremy. What I have learned from my boys is to expect the unexpected. Ryan amazes me with how handy he is to have around. He is creative and artistic, which he gets from me! Jeremy keeps us laughing almost daily with his antics. The kid could be a great stand-up comedian. Both are now grown and living on their own, . Our first tour of duty took us to Naval Hospital Oakland, CA. After that we've lived in Puerto Rico, Orlando, FL, Beaufort, SC, Yucca Valley, CA, Guam, San Diego, and we moved to Okinawa, Japan Feb. 2010, where we were till October 2014 when my husband retired. Being the "dependent spouse", as the military likes to refer to us as, I've had to find employment wherever we've lived. Some jobs were interesting, some not so much. I've been a healthcare coordinator, bookkeeper, worked in a music store selling sheet music and instruments and taking piano lessons, was a substitute teacher, hospital unit secretary, administrative assistant, receptionist, school clerical office worker, and my favorite, which I got back to in Okinawa, a Human Resources Technician, where I've found my niche. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have friendly people around me, fun, and laughter to be able to deal with the day-to-day. Again, the fun factor--If its no longer fun to work there, its time to leave. All this may sound confusing but if I were to do it all over again--the military lifestyle, moving, new jobs, etc.--I would in a heartbeat. What I've experienced, learned and seen about other countries and cultures you just can't get from a book. If I read about any of it in my grade school Geography book, I certainly had forgotten it all. It is actually quite exciting to discover what a new location has to offer. I have favorite things at each duty station, so I couldn't even tell you where my favorite place is. Imagine spending an hour at sunset swinging on a bench swing at a park on the waterfront (SC) or watching the space shuttle or Delta rockets rise into the sky from your back porch (FL). How about relaxing on beautiful sandy beaches without driving more than 20 minutes from your house (Puerto Rico and Guam)? Desert living grows on you, I've learned (CA). Maybe tasting and enjoying new foods and cultures is to your liking (everywhere). I've truly expanded my horizons. While living in Puerto Rico, we were able to t...Expand for more
ravel to St. John and St. Thomas, USVI. I had taken a second trip to St. Thomas with a couple girlfriends to shop for jewelry. Ladies--if the opportunity arises don't pass it by. Living on Guam has afforded us the opportunity to travel to tropical islands: Saipan, Yap, Pohnpei, Chuuk and Rota, to experience their culture and surroundings. I was able to accompany my husband to Tokyo, Japan and Honolulu, Hawaii to tour and relax while he attended conferences. I even took a perfect vacation in Bali with a friend (it is off limits to active duty but their families can go). Be sure to stop and take a look at my photo albums while you're here. Sorry-no Bali pics. I forgot my camera! UPDATE 8/2010: We took a mini vacation and visited Seoul, South Korea where we did some sight-seeing and shopping. We took a tour of the DMZ which was quite interesting, standing right on the line watching a North Korean soldier watching us! I had the opportunity to accompany my husband on a trip to Germany in April 2009. He went for a business seminar while I tagged along. He took a few extra days of vacation tme after the seminar to enjoy a short vacation, all in all, a 12 day trip. We took a couple tours and did some self-touring. I fell in love and hope someday the opportunity will arise again to go. Before moving to Guam, while still in Yucca Valley, CA,, I was very active in my church, a Calvary Chapel, joined the choir and could be found at many of the fellowship functions whether working or having fun. My friends will remember a womens' fellowship night when we all had dinner and played volleyball. I broke my wrist and for 5 weeks after that sported a "really cool" purple cast. I was in the choir at the time preparing for our Easter production. Our gowns were purple, so it only figured the cast should be too! It took me a few years, but I finally talked my husband into getting a dog. I give a lot of credit to my husband's old bosses in Twentynine Palms, CA as well. We found a perfect pet. Just right for an RV and a great traveler, Blinkin 183 (you younger kids can figure out where that name came from) was my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He passed away during an RV trip in Alaska in 2016. What do I like to do during my free time? I like to travel, read, quilt, spend time at the beach, bake and play with my dog and on the computer. Between work and all my other interests I usually have very little down time. . I've learned much over the years: enjoy what you have and free yourself of unnecessary things, do what you love, make the most of every situation, love with all your heart, find the good in everyone, forgive because it takes too much energy to hold a grudge and you forget why anyway, determine what is REALLY important because all else is just stuff, open your mind, keep learning and experiencing, do something different, count every one of your blessings reflecting on them frequently, and trust in the Lord. I am truly blessed to have learned all this before I get too old as so many people figure it out way too late in life. My story won't really end here. I hope I still have many years and many chapters to add. After all, there's still retirement to look forward to, traveling around the U.S. in our RV, looking for our favorite place before "settling down", IF we settle down, though we're leaning towards Central Florida right now! UPDATE: I retired in 2014 and now live and travel full time in our RV. I want to reconnect with many of my high school friends, so if you want, please email me. I've become an email "junkie" and love getting email (not junk email so please don't spam me with those messages that get forwarded around the world all the time. They will stop with me). When you visit my profile please sign my guestbook, view all my photo albums, and leave comments, etc. I leave them all there for you to enjoy. Let me know you've visited. Thanks for stopping by!
