Vicki's Story

I am married to Larry Cummings (LTHS Class of 1966) and have 3 grown children. We currently live in the Phoenix, AZ area. While we all aspire to greatness in our youth, the reality is that most of us just have simple, regular lives that pass by all too quickly leaving us wondering where the time went and how we got where we are today. We have experienced no great revelations or extraordinary escapades, but rather a steady passage from one day to the next dealing with each day's activities, problems and triumphs as they arose. Like millions of others, this is the story of my life as well. For me, that passage has been largely pleasant serving up a good variety of people, places and things to occupy my mind and provide a feeling of accomplishment. My journey has taken me from Chicago to Fairbanks, Alaska, back to Chicago, and then to the Phoenix, Arizona valley where I live now. After graduating high school I occupied myself by going to college for a while, which I absolutely hated. I decided to leave school and worked in advertising for a few years, getting married in 1970. A short time later I moved into medical administration/office management where I worked for over 20 years occasionally taking time off to give birth to three children. Looking for something different, I left medicine and explored a variety of business genres from gift baskets to construction before settling into my current role of managing a small business while researching and selling promotional advertising products. What I learned is that no job is as easy or straight forward as it seems, whether it is supporting the practice standards of physicians, reviewing business expenses, or being a stay-at-home mother. Luckily this also means that there is always something...Expand for more
new to be experienced, a skill to be learned, or a place to go, so life is never without interest or challenges. I am lucky to have been blessed with a great husband and three children I adore. I met Larry at Lindblom High School and he has been putting up with me all these years. My most important accomplishments are my children. John lives in Topeka, Kansas where he works at Washburn University as program coordinator of intramural sports; Sara works in administrative support for a local collection agency; and Chris splits his time as assistant deli manager at a local health/whole foods market, cooking at a restaurant, and playing bass with his band, Incidental. All three are strong, independent individuals and I am proud to be their mother and their friend. After my family, the most memorable thing I have done is driving from Chicago to Fairbanks, Alaska and back again. If I was to select a place to re-visit it would be Alaska. I would like to cruise the islands of the panhandle, visit the glaciers, see more of the interior, and camp in Denali Park. I think it would be interesting to see how things have changed since we lived there in 1971. If my life has been unique in any way, it is the people I have met on my journey. Business ties have provided opportunities to meet people from all over the world giving my husband and me a large, varied pool of acquaintances. We have a large assemblage of family, and a small circle of close friends, several dating from our days in high school. I also have my favorite and cherished gems, a handful of people dear to my heart that I feel have played an important role in shaping my life. I am grateful for each and every person who has touched my life and consider you all to be the gifts of my existence.
