Vicki's Story

Shortly before graduation I began working at a radio station in Pensacola after school. I had applied and been accepted into airline stewardess school. Yeah, I was going to be one of those "coffee, tea or me" girls. As it got closer to graduation and my job continued at TK101, I fell in love with the broadcast environment. The concerts I was able to see for free, the backstage access--I was young and easily influenced and decided I didn't want to be some silly stewardess afterall. I continued working at the station after my graduation for two years. During this time, I worked with my soon to be first husband. We started dating and the rest is history...at least until 1991. In 1982 I made the move to be a State of FL employee and stayed with the Department of Children and Families until 1999. During this time, I worked for a period of time in Tallahassee at the department headquarters office as a systems analyst. Implementing accounting systems statewide and training across the state. My daughter, Shawna, and I did the move to Tallahassee solo. She and I, packed up and moved--not having any friends in Tallahassee--what a growing experience! She began kindergarten while we were there and she was and still is my buddy to this day. After I decided that accounting systems was my new love, I decided to return to Pensacola to pursue my degree. Upon my arrival back in town, I met my current husband. Fell in love and three months later we were married. We now live in Pace, we had a daughter together who is now 13. There were lots of bumps along the paths in my life and I adopted the philosophy that there is a lesson to be learned from every encounter and...Expand for more
while it might not be clear to me at the time it occurs, eventually there is that "ah-ha" moment when you realize why this person crossed your path or why something happened. I am one of those very even keeled people, I love to laugh and I dislike those who judge others just because they dont' conform to society's norm. I don't conform to expectations. I am an observer of people and their body language and sit back and watch/listen in order to understand their personality. You can learn so much from just taking the time to observe and understand the best way to communicate with their personality type. So, what do I do now--I have taken a job as a manager, working in Biloxi on the Hurricane Katrina project for Mississippi Emergency Management/FEMA. I travel weekly, live in a casino (not as glamorous as it sounds..trust me!) but we are making a difference in getting this devastated area operational again. Schools and colleges are being re-built, water systems and streets repaired and providing housing assistance for those who lost everything. I had lunch with three ladies who work for one of the programs yesterday and all three had houses go under water with Katrina. I can't imagine what it was like immediately after the storm and these are strong people who have stayed and re-built their lives. Three years later and their are millions of dollars of work still left to be done. So, this is what I do--rewarding? very much so. Lonely? sometimes living in a hotel is the pits, I treasure the weekends with my family. Quality time is my goal when I cross the Florida line. I am looking forward to catching up with all of you.
