Vicki's Story
After graduating high school I joined the Navy. My first command was in Hawaii for four and a half years. How lucky was I! I then requested a transfer to San Diego California where I spent eight years at two commands on the submarine base and then went across the bay to the Naval Amphibious Base and worked for an Admiral in the intelligence division for four years. I then went to Guam for two years and worked in the administrative office at a Mobile Mine Unit. I returned to San Diego to finish up my twenty years and retire at 38 years old. During that time I got married and divorced in Hawaii. Married again to Louis a fellow sailor in San Diego and had two sons Ryan who will be 29 soon and Nathan who just turned 27 a couple of months ago. and have gotten chemotherapy over the years whenever needed. I've been in remission for over six years now. I got pregnant at 40 unexpectantly and gave birth to our daughter Clarissa who is now nineteen. Our family relocated to New Mexico in 2006. I recently had surgery for melanoma on my leg and am happy to report that they were able to remove it all but a test revealed that I am at high risk for future skin cancer. Must get routine screenings. A lot of sunburns over the years. Didn't know the importance of sunscreen especially on fair skin. I'm currently unemployed and helping to care for my 84 year old mother-in-law who moved in with us six months ago and my two small dogs and my daughters one year old pit bull and my son Ryan's cat who he left with us. Come and visit New Mexico. The sunsets are beautiful!
