Vicky's Story
Life
I have been married for the past 14 years to my wonderful husband, Fred and we have two beautiful children. Jessica is 18 and a Senior at good ol' DeWitt High School. She is also a teen actress, having appeared in several stage productions as well as a movie, "Escape to Blackbeard Island". She has been accepted on a full-ride scholarship to Michigan State University where she will start in the fall of 2008, majoring in Performing Arts. Nicolas is 13 and my husband and I homeschool him. It's something we've done since he was in the 1st grade and we find it very fulfilling, but a bit challenging, as well. He excels in Math and Science and doesn't really like English or Spelling. He would also like to attend Michigan State University with a major in Art. His goal in life is to create either video games or have his own cartoon strip.
My husband and I own a small Antiques business where we buy and sell antiques. Our specialty is Art Pottery from the '30s - '60s, but, as babyboomers, we are enjoying reliving our childhoods through vintage toys and games.
In our spare time we enjoy classic cars and classic car shows. On any given weekend from May - October you can find us at any of the thousands of car shows in and around Michigan.
My husband is from one of the founding families of DeWitt. His family has been in this area since the 1830s. Our heritage and the history of DeWitt are very important to us and we collect old "DeWitt" items whenever we come across them.
School
I attended DeWitt High School from September, 1976, through June, 1980.
...Expand for more
My friends included Beverly Wagner, Paul Gerred, Iona Summers, Gilbert Lee, Jon Simpson, and Barb Swagart.
My favorite classes were all the business classes I took -- especially the ones that Mr. Boutwell and Mrs. Baker taught. I also enjoyed the English classes I took with Penny (George) Rypstra. She really encouraged my writing, which, to this day, I enjoy. Because of her I actually considered a career in Journalism.
My least favorite classes were Spanish (thank God I only took 1 year!), any of the math classes, and science.
Among my favorite memories are the Prom and Homecoming dances, as well as just being around my friends all day. I really don't have any regrets and, if I could, I'd do it all over again -- exactly the same as I did the first time!
College
From September, 1980, though most of 1981 I attended Lansing Community College, with a major in Business. Unfortunately, finances prevented me from completing my degree. So, after 24 years of being away from the academic environment, I went back to school in July, 2005, attending Western International University. In February 2007, I graduated with my Business Degree. I have now started work on my Bachelor Degree, attending the University of Phoenix, where I will graduate in July, 2008, with a degree in Psychology. I intend to continue on to get my Master's in Psychology, and perhaps my PhD as well. My ultimate goal is to help abused and/or neglected children.
Workplace
I've had many jobs since graduating from high school, but I am currently not working as I continue to pursue my education.
