Vicky's Story

Hi friends, In sharing part of my story somethings may not be in the exact order that it happened, but I will try. Has it really been thirty plus years, well I think there is a mistake on the birthdate on my drivers lisence. After graduating I stayed at the beach most of the time when I was not working at the Palms Theatre. I got married and moved to Colorado. Being that I was running from rather than running to something, this did not last. I came back to Melbourne and worked and learned to shoot pool, pretty good for a girl.LOL!!!. I became good at 8 and 9 ball so I joined a womens and mens/womens tournament league. This was a fun time in my life in spite of learning about relationships that I had no idea how to do. As you will see below I joined the Army about four years later. In 1987 I came to the realization that I had some issues to deal with. I began my sobriety and will celebrate 22 years in May 2009. This has been a life changing experience and adventure. This road has been difficult and challenging to say the least. I am greatful for having served in the Army with a 3 year tour, this gave me the opportunity to work in the medical field for most of my life. Of course you know being 24 and in the Army I was no where close to seeing I had any problems. Furtunately I was able in spite of everything to work in hospitals, labs and medical offices with a great attitude after being an Army Medic. I would not trade my life journey for anything. I have become a better person and have more freedom from looking through those rose colored glasses. I still like wearing those small hippy looking ones that have green, red or blue lenses though. I have also kept my sense of humor and am greatful that as well. In 1993 I dedicated my life to the Lord and with training at a Mission based Bible College a few years later the doors began to open to ministry to help others. I believe many have the perception that missionaries only work overseas. I have come to know that our own backyard is a mission field. My first opportunity was to be a caregiver for a 91 year old until his last day at 94. I was so blessed to be a part of Charlie's life. He was like a grandpa to me.He was the funniest man and what a sense of humour. When I see his pictures all I can is smile, he is missed. I was an intern/staff person as a house parent to women and their children at a ministry to help in recovery from life controlling problems, including, drugs, alcohol, depression etc... After that I was married and helped raise a grandson in the family I married into. This was an awesome experience being that I have no children of my own. Unfortunately this was not a lasting one however, there was so much good having been there for that baby....Expand for more
At this time I became interested in photography and absolutely love it. Can't live without a camera.Just ask my dachshunds, Jimmie,Little Girl and Gem Marie. I promise they are not spoiled and are not in charge of the house.Right!!!! In 2006 my father passed and during this time my brothers and my mother needed someone with her so I moved back home to care for her. It is amazing the timing of things! This was a bitter sweet ending. We came to know the love for each other that we never really experienced and she was so sweet,it broke my heart to see her leave. So getting over the loss of parents, husband, children and grandchild has been definitely something else to walk thru. Shortly after mothers death I had back surgery. I had reinjured it picking her up from a fall. She fell often but was a very strong woman. I truly believe that nothing happens in our lives by accident. There is a learning and growing period during the vallies and difficult times in our lives. Learning to look beyond my self and seeing that this life is not about me has been an awakening.Wow, what a revelation. God has given us all... gifts and talents. I have learned they are not to be kept for myself but to be given away and shared with others who need help along the same roads I have traveled. I have been fortunate to have others placed along my life path to guide and direct me. Friends, strangers, pastors etc... Keeping it going, passing it on and sowing into the lives of others is the least I can do and acually required to keep it. I am no where close to being perfect and have to keep a close watch on my hearts attitude so as not to take on the anger, bitterness and judgemental attitudes of the world. I am a work in progress and have not arrived.. I try to stay willing and teachable so to change in the areas that can be difficult to see within. Taking a look in the mirror is the most difficult thing but, the deeper I have looked the less finger pointing I can do. As a missionary at Abba House I trusted God would supply, which he always has by one means or another. Always from an unexpected source and away right on time. Unpaid jobs means having complete and total faith that all is well. There have been times that I would write the checks and remind God that the bills were due. At the eleventh hour a check would show up. Walking by faith is total dependence on God and trusting that he has my best interest at heart. Once I realized that if I was doing what I believed he was having me do, then that means he would make a way , where there seems no way. Thank you for taking the time to read what I have shared and would love to hear from you and hope to hear your story about the road you have traveled. Sincerely, Vicky Floyd
