Vicky's Story

As most of my friends know, I was married to Raymond Hay in my sophmore year. Also known as (Butch). He served in Vietnam and died Dec. 25, 1969. After that I again married in 1972, to a local police officer, but divorced him. We had a daughter that is in the old photo of me. In 1978 I went to National Business College for a year. Tommy Vaughn and I had lunch and a beer every day, and were pals. Then I married John Jones. John was Service Manager of Truck Enterprizes of Roanoke. We were Licensed Private Investigators and partners until his death in Oct. 2005 from a massive brain tumor. I went back to NBC and graduated in 1990 in Secretarial Science. Since John died, I have kept my Private Investigators Licence and have become Certified in Forensics. Have worked a lot of interesting cases in many areas of VA. I remarried June 6, 2009 to Buddy Tolley, who I had dated 43 years ago. Well, you just can't go back. That marriage is being annulled. So once again I am single. My daughter is now 37 years old and lives in her own home. I bought a house in Springtree subdivision in 1979. I am still there. I just did a $100,000 addition and remodel to my home so guess I will die here and be carried out ten toes up. LOL Amid all of the above I wore many job titles. I worked at the old Grant's Store downtown during 1969. After that I became a telephone operator for C&P. Then office manager at Hills Dept. Store. Sales and purchasing agent for Ramsey Ford Sales in Rocky Mount for 8 1/2 years until Mr. Ramsy died and the dealership closed. This is when I became an avid Mustang enthusiest. I had a Mustang of every year from 1964 1/2 to a new one now in 2008. I showed my 1973 Mach I in cars shows and always won best of show. Even at the Civic Center for MDA. My car made headlines Then for many years I was a housewife, mother, and soul mate to John. Then I bought 3 Antique stores, the last one being Antique's Too! in Vinton. It was there that I got to see Marcia Bandy Gibson, one of my best girlfriends in school, when she bought some of my antiques. Oh, and Donna Crouch. I Don't remember her married name. And Brenda Hayes! Gosh, I saw a lot of Jefferson friends while I owned that store. The only reason I closed it was that my Mom was diagnosed with cancer in 1999 and I never left her side from the moment I found out until she passed away. She lived in NC.,(after remarrying) but I brought her to live with us for the last four months. After I became registered with The Department of Criminal Justice Service, I began a whole new career. It was interrupted after 9/11 and I was sent to Roanoke Regional Airport to be a screener until the Federal Govt. got TSA's trained. I hated that job! Just try to get a man to part with his wallet~~impossible. They would give you their boxers before the wallet. From there I went to work at Piedmont as an Inventory Specialist with Joyce Brown Yeates Lee. We both had the same 3 days off and ...Expand for more
could fly free anywhere. And fly we did! Always flew 1st. class when possible and it only cost us $15. I guess our biggest adventures were to San Francisco, Calif.,Silverthorne Colorada and Las Vegas Nevada. She was also a southeast gal. Joyce is now single and is a flight attendent for US Air. And still lives in Rke. John and I became involved with Roanoke Rifle and Revolver Club and by him being on the Board of Director's until his death. But we became avid shooter's. Mostly skeet and sporting clays. Handgun professionals and certified. He was an NRA instructor and I his secretary. Then we bought a Brittany bird dog, and began following the Bird Trials all over the country. Our "lady" won us many trophies. John was a Licensed Private Pilot and I took ground school and emergency flight and landing. So we traveled quite a bit after that. He was also a 2nd Lt.in Civil Air Patrol, being a wingmaster. So of course we became members of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Ass. and spent a lot of time doing that. There was another Organization, Gathering of The Eagles, that met here in Roanoke each year. We helped out some with that one, since it was our home base. We stayed very, very busy with hobbies and Investigations. After John died, I became a recluse and stayed in my bedroom for 2 years. He was my TRUE soul mate, and I was alone for the first time in my adult life. Now I am a member of classmates.com (Jefferson:69) and pogo.com and have become an addict playing the torunaments. LOL Other than all of the above, I still collect my cars. I just sold my Chrysler Sebring Convertible and bought a Mystic Grey (it changes colors,no lie) Mustang GT Convertible. It is a 2005 like brand new. An old couple (older than me) owned it and only took it on one trip. It even has pajama's, as Vicki Whitmire Gardner, named it's car cover. Some of you may know Vicki Ann Whitmire, as she graduated in 1970 from JSH. She and I are best friends. But back to my autos. I bought a new Mustang GT Coupe in Mar. 2008. Candy Apple Red (beauty) with a big V8 and have already gotten 2 speeding tickets. It only has 2,000 miles on it now. John and I bought a $51,000 Eddie Bauer Expedition in 2004 with travel plans, but we never got to do it before he died. It only has 14,000 miles. Then my Papa (step-father) gave me his 2000 GMC Sierra when he lost his eyesight. It only has 13,000 actual miles. Everyone wants to buy that truck! So none of them get much milage. If I am going to travel I want to fly. None of those cross country car trips for me. I had enough of that when my daughter lived in Kansas. Well, am running out of gossip, so if there is anything you would like to know about me, just ask. Wanda Siler Hanger and I are still good friends. I stopped by and saw her about a month ago and we email every day. So ask away! I'll gladly share what I can remember lol. Got that old age CRS. Love to all. Vicky (formally Victoria (Vicky) Ashby.
